Checkers Check-In (Nov. 23)
It’s time again for our Friday Charlotte Checkers check-in and once again we’re bringing you good news. When we checked in last week the Checkers were preparing to square off against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins for two consecutive days in Scranton, PA. The Checkers left Scranton on Saturday with two more victories and four more points. Both were one goal victories with the game winner coming late in regulation or in overtime, but a victory is a victory.
The Checkers came back home to Bojangles Coliseum this past Tuesday and Wednesday to play the Belleville Senators. The Canadian team got the best of the Checkers on Tuesday with a 5-1 victory. But after that tough loss, the Checkers bounced back and came ready to give their fans a show on Wednesday. On the first $1 beer night of the season, the Charlotte fans showed out in great numbers and with extra enthusiasm. The game didn’t disappoint, as it was a battle all game long and went to overtime. In the last minute of overtime, Checkers center Martin Necas found the back of the net to give the Checkers a thrilling overtime victory over the Senators. Another victory meant another two points for the Checkers, who still lead the entire AHL with 29 points on the season.
The Checkers will attempt to build upon their points lead this weekend as they take on the Montreal Canadians’ affiliate, the Laval Rocket on Saturday and Sunday. The Rocket only have 7 wins and 16 points on the season, providing a great opportunity for the Checkers to increase their lead. Saturday’s game starts at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday’s game at 1:00 p.m. Like I said last week, if you are passing up the opportunity to come out to the Coliseum to watch the Checkers, you are really missing out. While the temperature is cool inside, the Checkers are on fire!
