Too many times when people think of Charlotte sports, they only think of the Panthers and Hornets.  A lot of people might also think about NASCAR and the Knights.  But FAR too often, people omit the Charlotte Checkers.  Many folks have heard of them and know they are a hockey team, but don’t know much else beyond that.  And that’s such a shame.  The Charlotte Checkers provide one of the best sports atmospheres the city of Charlotte has to offer.  In addition to that, they offer a high quality team to root for.

Let’s begin with the quality of the team.  If you’re not aware, the Charlotte Checkers are in 1st place in the Atlantic Division, nine points ahead of the next team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  Not only are they in 1st place in their division though, they lead the entire AHL atop the standings.  Their nine point division lead also translates to a nine point league lead.  It is safe to say the Checkers are on a roll this season.  Now is a perfect time for new fans to begin going to Checkers games as they begin the latter half of the season looking to finish just as strong and make a playoff run.

The game atmosphere is also electric.  All home games are played at the Bojangles Coliseum, which gets loud with passionate fans rooting on the Checkers.  Even the casual hockey fans have a great time at Checkers games because there is so much happening, and so much excitement all around.  The team is having a lot of success, which gives the crowd so much energy.  Every time I have been in attendance, I had an absolute blast.  The team offers many promotions as well, such as $1 beer nights and free taco nights with a Checkers win.  Chubby the mascot is entertaining, the CheckMates liven the game experience, and Greazy Keyz is a boss on the organ.  Everything about the game experience is so much fun to fans from all ages.
