Farmers Insurance Open DFS Preview

Farmers Open 2019.png

Hello, golf DFS players! This is the inaugural golf preview for The Sports Chief, and what better place to start than at Torrey Pines? This will be the first event for many golfers this weekend, and it makes for an exciting event. There will be 156 golfers participating in the Farmers Insurance Open and I will be playing on FantasyDraft for the event. The format for FanatsyDraft is simple, you choose 7 golfers…6 of which will count towards your final score. (the lowest scoring golfer will be dropped) Ultimately, you want to choose the best finishing golfer, with hopes of all making the final cut.

Torrey Pines is located in San Diego, CA on the site of the former Camp Callan, which was a US Army Camp during World War II. The course is comprised of 36 holes, and two major courses. (North and South, both of which is used for the Open) The South course is the longest course that the PGA uses and will be played 3 of the 4 days. With that in mind, I comprised some of my golfers based on their driving abilities, as the weather will be magnificent. Minimal winds and 70 degrees makes for a great golf outing.

Cody Gribble $10,500

My lowest priced golfer will be Gribble. (Not Dale) With only 1 PGA event victory, he is a relatively quiet name in the world of golf. His resume is impressive though, he went to the University of Texas and played with Jordan Spieth on a National Championship team in 2012. Last year, Gribble made the final cut at Torrey Pines, placing 35th with an average score of 71.75 and ended with a (-1). This strong outing has persuaded me enough to go with him at a low price.

Michael Kim $11,200

With an impressive outing last year at Torrey Pines, Michael Kim was competing for a victory. He placed 23rd and botched the final 18 holes. The Former University of California product has only missed the cut for the Farmers Insurance Open once since 2013. An interesting fact about Kim, is that he grew up in San Diego, and went to Torrey Pines High School. He played on the course to hone his game, and knows it fairly well. I chose him last year to win it, and at 300-1 odds, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go for it again.

Brendan Steele $12,200

I am going with another California native with this choice. He played at Cal-Riverside in college, and is rock-solid at Torrey Pines. Steele has not missed a cut since 2012 and is one of the best drivers in the game. This year, he is hitting it 315.2 yards per drive, and 76.2% they land in the green. Steele is a vet who plays it safe, and I wanted to go with an option who makes the final cut safely.

Jordan Spieth $15,500

Now for my big-time gamers…Spieth is 25 years old and already has 11 PGA Tour wins in his repertoire. Although Spieth is not particularly great at this course, he is a great golfer and at a sub $16,000 price…I could not resist. The odds for Jordan to win are at 28-1 which is crazy, but understandable given his record at La Jolla. I picked him solely for the golfer, and also it would be cool to see him and Gribble atop the standings come Sunday.

Rickie Fowler $16,000

Another Cali guy, Fowler is from Anaheim and is participating in his first big event of the season. He has not made the cut since 2015, but in the early 2010’s he was a regular in the top 20. In 2010, he placed 5th and I feel he will regain some of that mojo from that point in his career. He is also a bargain at 25-1 for the event and for this price, I wanted to get Fowler in my lineup. Plus…he cannot continue missing the cut here…right?

Justin Rose $17,200

One of the most consistent golfers on the PGA Tour is my next choice. Rose only missed one cut in all of 2018 and is 2 for 2 this year. With an 8th place finish in 2018 and a 4th place in 2017, Rose has been great at Torrey Pines recently. Even though there has been some news about how bad he hates his clubs this year…I am still going with the golfer. Jason Day is a great option at $17,000, but I feel he will be picked at a higher rate, so I went with the Englishman Rose.

Rory McIlroy $17,200

For his first outing at this course, I fully expect Rory to dominate this weekend. He is the best driver in the game, and this course fits his style immensely. Everyone knows McIlroy is an amazing golfer, and will be competing for the win. Tiger Woods will be playing as well, which leaves a star-studded lineup for the Farmers Open. Rory is 14-1 to win and I feel he is the best option for the weekend.

By the way, go check out FantasyDraft, they are a Charlotte area based company who provide Daily Fantasy games. I am excited to start the year out playing some PGA. I will be concentrating most of my articles via NASCAR once the season starts, but Golf is exciting to watch while channel swapping between that and racing. Also, follow us on twitter and check out our other awesome articles.
