WWE Power Rankings - Week of January 31st - February 5th
Welcome back to another week of WWE Power Rankings. This week was probably the most difficult to decipher because of the Royal Rumble and the RAW and SmackDown shows. I’m not going to spend a great deal of time to summarize the shows, however, I am going to hit the highlights of the shows. On RAW, the winner of the Men’s Royal Rumble opened the show and at the end of the segment, Triple H told Rollins he needed to decide which title he would be pursuing at WrestleMania, but more on that later. Dean Ambrose interrupted the segment and he and Rollins had a match immediately following. Rollins won the match and Ambrose was in the ring and said that he needed to get something off of his chest. Nia Jax and Tamina confronted Ambrose before he could say anything. Jax then attacked Ambrose and he left the ring. Ambrose made headlines yesterday after it was announced that he would not be re-signing with WWE. His contract ends in April just after WrestleMania 35. I’m not exactly sure if they’re trying to build a storyline for him after April, but for now, let’s assume he will be leaving. Something just doesn’t seem right about the whole situation. After that moment, there really wasn’t anything meaningful on for about an hour and a half. Ronda Rousey held an open challenge for the RAW Women’s Championship and it was Bayley that took her up on her offer. The two put on a solid match, but Rousey was the winner. Immediately following her victory, to everyone’s surprise, Becky Lynch comes out to steal the show. Lynch tells the WWE Universe that she will be facing Rousey at WrestleMania 35, which will likely be the main event. Braun Strowman and Drew McIntyre had a match that ended in a DQ, due to Baron Corbin’s involvement. To end the show, Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins had a confrontation and the segment ended with Seth Rollins taking multiple F-5’s.
SmackDown was just as electric as RAW after the PPV and just like the last few weeks, The Man opened the show. Charlotte Flair later interrupted and told Lynch that she should thank her for the opportunities that she has received lately. The segment ended with a sucker punch from Lynch and later a huge brawl. Next on the show, R-Truth received a United States Championship opportunity, because of his sabotaged spot in the Royal Rumble. In controversial fashion, he pinned Nakamura to capture his second US title reign in his career. He then immediately defended his title against Rusev and won his title defense. R-Truth is on the rise. Shane McMahon and The Miz had a celebration after their recent Tag Team title win at Royal Rumble and after that segment, the winner of the next match would be their opponents at Elimination Chamber. The Usos won the match, which was a fun match to watch. The ending of the show was given to the WWE Champion, Daniel Bryan. He brought out his new “insurance policy”, as AJ Styles called him, Rowan. Bryan went on to say that he has been a hypocrite and that he needed to change the climate in the WWE. So, he unveiled a new design for the WWE Championship, one made of 100% sustainable hemp and wood from naturally fallen oak. Five SmackDown superstars then came out and Triple H announced that these men would face off in an Elimination Chamber match. And now, here are my Power Rankings for this week’s WWE action.
- 10: R-Truth (NR)
R-Truth has put together a really solid week. He was scheduled to be the number 30 entry, but he was taken out by Nia Jax before he could get in the ring. He was awarded a shot at the United States Championship and surprisingly won the match. It wasn’t without controversy, but Rusev crashed the party and challenged him to a match. In his first title defense, Truth won that match as well and then both Nakamura and Rusev attacked him. R-Truth is arguably one of the best entertainers in the business at the moment and putting the title on him is something cool to see. I’m not sure how long his reign will last, but I’m going to enjoy it. Also, I never would’ve thought R-Truth would be in my Top 10, but here he is. Let’s all hope it lasts.
- 9: Finn Bálor (1)
I seriously debated not putting Bálor in my Power Rankings, but I couldn’t really think of anyone else to put here. Not to discredit Bálor, he put on a solid showing at Royal Rumble, but he looked very weak on RAW. He got demolished by Bobby Lashley and it appears that they’ll have a feud coming up. I think Bálor will take the title and it could be a lengthy reign. Bálor doesn’t need to be forgotten this time and him taking the Intercontinental Championship would be a perfect fit for him. I don’t think he’ll be back in the Universal title picture until after WrestleMania, but he should always be in consideration.
- 8: Charlotte Flair (9)
The Queen had a great week, although she didn’t really accomplish much this week, except being a thorn in Becky Lynch’s side. She was the favorite heading into the Rumble match and she lasted to the end of the match, but was thrown out by The Man. On SmackDown, she confronted Lynch and looked very strong in the segment. She sold the heck out of a punch from Lynch and even initiated a brawl. She gained a spot in the Power Rankings because of it and moving forward, it seems like she will work her way back into the title picture, but in a triple threat at WrestleMania with Lynch and Ronda Rousey. We will see though.
- 7: Nia Jax (NR)
Other than superstars in title matches or winners of the Rumble, I don’t know if there is a performer that had a better week than Nia Jax. She was in the bottom three in the Women’s Rumble, she put herself in the Men’s Rumble, and took finishers from Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio, and Randy Orton on Sunday night. On Monday night, she confronted Dean Ambrose and attacked him and then she and Tamina beat the team of Alexa Bliss and Mickie James to clinch a spot at Elimination Chamber for a chance at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. It was a big week for Nia and I’m not sure how long the hot streak will last, but clearly she’s not on the bad side of creative at the moment.
- 6: Daniel Bryan (6)
Daniel Bryan could’ve been higher on the list, but in my mind, there were five other competitors that had a better week. Bryan retained his title at Royal Rumble in a decent match, but we were all wondering about the deal with Rowan. He came to the aid of the champion in the match, but there was no explanation as to why he was there. It appears that he is acting as a bodyguard/manager for Bryan at the moment, but it still isn’t really certain what is going on. We do know, however, that he changed the climate of the WWE by revealing a new WWE Championship. He threw the leather belt in a garbage can and revealed a new hemp belt with oak plates. Personally, I think the belt sucks, but I guess Bryan is doing his job if he is irritating fans. On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of people wanting to buy the belt if it ever hits the WWE shop. He will be defending the new belt in an Elimination Chamber and I personally don’t want to see any more of this belt, but I think we may be seeing the hemp belt for a decent tenure.
- 5: Asuka (4)
Asuka may have had the strong Rumble performance of the night. She made Becky Lynch tap out in an exciting matchup. We are hearing more about Lynch this week and for good reason, but Asuka has become a forgone conclusion very quickly. She was not on SmackDown Tuesday night and there was absolutely no mention of the SmackDown Women’s title picture. Now you are probably wondering, why did she move up a spot if she was forgotten about this week? Only because of what I said earlier. Asuka made the Royal Rumble winner tap out, very quickly I might add. Asuka should be in the Top 5 for that reason alone, and she is. I thought it would slow Lynch’s momentum down if she lost straight up to Asuka and then entered the Rumble, but that clearly didn’t happen. Hopefully Asuka will be involved in next week’s SmackDown and hopefully we know who she will challenge coming up.
- 4: Seth Rollins (7)
Rollins is another guy that could’ve easily been higher on the list, but I chose to put him at 4 this week, because personally, I thought he looked very weak in the final segment of RAW Monday night. Taking multiple F-5’s is not a good look for anyone, not to mention the recent Royal Rumble winner. It was pretty obvious that he was going to win the Rumble and presumably take on Lesnar for the Universal Championship. He did pick up a win against Dean Ambrose in RAW’s first match of the night, but as we now know it looked like it was just another put over job as it looks like Ambrose is on his way out. Unless something drastic happens, look for him to have a permanent spot in the Top 5 for a good stretch.
- 3: Brock Lesnar (10)
At number 3, I chose The Beast. This seemed pretty obvious to put him here after the week he had. He looked beat up in his match with Finn Bálor and still found himself holding the title up at the end of the night, unsurprisingly though. Just when we think that Lesnar won’t be champ much longer, he still is the champion. Like it or not, Lesnar has put on marvelous matches at PPVs and has proved why he is the champion, but when will enough be enough? If they do it the right way, his reign should end at WrestleMania, but we know this may not be the case. His appearance on RAW made him look even stronger and honestly, I don’t know what it would take for him to drop the title at this point. We probably won’t be seeing much of him for the next couple months, but when he does show up, he will be all business.
- 2: Ronda Rousey (5)
If you have been following along and trying to see who is number one, it isn’t rocket science, just hold on tight. Number two is Ronda Rousey and she has had an excellent week, but one person has had a better one, not by much though. Rousey successfully retained her RAW Women’s Championship on Sunday night against Sasha Banks and Monday night against Bayley. After her match with Bayley, she was greeted by The Man. Lynch told her she would be challenging her at WrestleMania and Ronda had a great rebuttal. Many WWE fans have been very hard on Rousey because she has flubbed some words on her promos. I really hate that for her. She was booed out of the building Monday night and for what reason? I really don’t know. Flubbing words is what humanizes her and I think besides Lynch, she has delivered the best promos since arriving to the WWE. Whether you like her or not, she is the most popular female athlete in the world and is doing a great job in her first year as a professional wrestler. I would even go on to say her end of the promo was stronger than Lynch’s on Monday night. Needless to say, I’m excited for WrestleMania and the opportunity to see two of the best go to work.
- 1: Becky Lynch (3)
There really wasn’t another spot for her on the list. The Man is the 2019 Royal Rumble winner and will be heading to WrestleMania to face Ronda Rousey. If you aren’t following Becky Lynch on social media, follow her right this moment. She is an entertainment genius that cannot be slowed down. Also, she just celebrated a birthday yesterday, which adds on to the spectacular week she had. The crowd reaction every time she walks down the ramp is comparable to Stone Cold Steve Austin. The WWE has pure gold at the moment and she needs to stay at the top for a while. Some may have a problem with me putting her number 1 because she did lose in her title match and that is a valid reason, but it doesn’t seem like anybody cares about her losing against Asuka. Look for her to stay near the top at least until April.
