Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy that revolves around Rachel Chu and Nick Young’s relationship. Rachel is an Asian-American living in New York as an economics professor and unbeknownst to her, Nick’s family is one of the wealthiest in all of Asia. They are visiting his hometown of Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding and this will be her first time meeting his family. Knowing very little of his family’s history, her road to acceptance will be a very bumpy ride. She must contend with numerous jealous women envying her position and above all else, Nick’s disapproving mother.

I can’t say that I have spent much time in the romantic comedy genre but something about this one drew me in. Based on the novel written by Kevin Kwan, this film was light, warm, and overall, quite an enjoyable adaptation. Constance Wu and Henry Golding, Rachel and Nick, had on-screen chemistry that felt genuine but predictable as with the rest of the acting amongst the others. The sets and sceneries were outstanding and chosen with great care. This was an all Asian cast and it was really cool getting to experience that culture from different perspectives of Asians living in all parts of the world. I would like to see more of Awkwafina in future films. She was hilarious and definitely my favorite character in this one. I think this is one that I would watch again at some point. I wouldn’t call it a great movie, but it was good. 3.5/5
