AEW Power Rankings: Week of December 20th 2019
This is the last AEW Power Rankings of the year and it was a great year for AEW. They will take Christmas off and will be back on New Year’s Day. Dynamite lost the ratings matchup this week, but still put on a solid show. 2020 will be a very telling year for AEW to see if they will succeed long-term and I really have no doubts that they will be successful. Probably around next week sometime, I will put out a year end article for the AEW Power Rankings to highlight the last few months, so it should be interesting to see who had the best 2019 in AEW. Here are the last AEW Power Rankings of 2019.
- 5: SoCal Uncensored
They happened to win the main event, but more importantly, SCU successfully retained their tag titles against The Young Bucks. It looks like we will see SCU as champs going into 2020, but for how much longer? If I had to make a guess, I’d say they will be the first champs in AEW to drop the titles, but I obviously could be wrong about that. The Dark Order spot was weird, but so has their involvement thus far in AEW. We’ll see where this will lead, but for now SCU closes the year in the Top 5 and I’d say they’ll be strong competitors for the year end Top 5.
- 4: Awesome Kong
Awesome Kong made her Dynamite debut on Wednesday and appears to be the strongest competitor in the AEW Women’s division. The Nightmare Collective is a cool idea and I think there is a lot of potential with the group, but I want to see more of Awesome Kong. I understand that she wouldn’t benefit for working a full-time schedule, but it is still great seeing her put in dominating performances.
- 3: Lucha Brothers
The Lucha Bros and the team of Kenny Omega and Hangman Page kicked off the show and the Lucha Bros captured the win. They are towards the top of an awesome tag division and it appears that there is a budding feud between Omega and Page. That should be an interesting future matchup, but for now the Lucha Bros are considered automatic tag title contenders.
- 2: Kris Statlander
Kris Statlander’s rise to the top of the Women’s division has been marvelous. I didn’t know of Statlander prior to AEW, but she has been impressive in each match that I’ve seen her in. She defeated Britt Baker on Wednesday to become the new Number One contender for Riho’s AEW Women’s Championship. I don’t really expect her to take the title, but I think she and Riho will put on an awesome match. Also, she declined the offer from The Nightmare Collective, so they could factor in the decision of the next AEW Women’s title match.
- 1: Jungle Boy
Jungle Boy benefited from a big-time match against a big-time performer this week. It wasn’t a title match, but it was a match to see if Jungle Boy could have a 10-minute match with Le Champion. He successfully did so and I think it establishes him as a title contender in the near future, Jericho walked out of the match, but is still clearly waiting on Jon Moxley’s answer to his Inner Circle invite. I was under the impression that this was going to be a title match going into Wednesday night, but it wasn’t necessary. Jungle Boy showed his potential on Wednesday and hopefully he gets more opportunities to shine in the near future.
