Charlotte Checkers Check-In (February 1)

We’re back for another weekly check-in and hope everyone had a great week.  The AHL is coming off their all-star break this week, with some league games starting back last night.  The Checkers will be back in action tonight and tomorrow night against the Providence Bruins in Charlotte.  If you don’t have any plans yet, you should be part of the action in Bojangles Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. tonight and 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night.

Last weekend the Checkers played to a 1-1 record, capping off a great first half of the season in which they amassed 66 total points and lead the entire league by nine points.  All-star break did come at an opportune time for the Checkers though, as they ended the first half losing three out of their last four.  More than anything, I believe the team was wearing down a bit and the fatigue factor caught up to them.  Last Friday in Providence against the Bruins, the Checkers got out to a quick start, but gave up four unanswered goals.  That proved to be too much for Charlotte to overcome, losing 5-3.  The next day in Hartford was much better, with the Checkers scoring five goals and winning 5-2.  A day after Jake Bean had a two-goal game, Aleksi Saarela found the back of the net twice for the good guys.

The Checkers will be looking to get revenge tonight on the Bruins for last Friday’s defeat.  The matchup between these two teams is in Charlotte’s favor thus far on the season, with a 3-2 advantage.  The Bruins are currently 4th in the Atlantic Division, 15 points behind the Checkers.  After a quick two-day rest, the Checkers will be back on the ice Tuesday and Wednesday against the Cleveland Monsters (formerly Lake Erie Monsters).  These will be the last home games before a two and a half week road trip.  That will also be the first matchup of the season between the Checkers and the Monsters, so it should be very interesting.  Cleveland is currently sitting in 5th in the North division with 47 points, so they will be looking to have a strong 2nd half and would love to do some damage against AHL’s number one team.  Both of those games will be at 7:00 p.m.

Make sure to get your tickets now.  You can order tickets for tonight’s game HERE, while you can order tickets for tomorrow night’s game HERE.  If you haven’t been part of the Checkers’ season yet, you are missing out on something special.  The atmosphere inside the Coliseum is electric and provides great entertainment for people of all ages.  Wear red or black and support the number one team in the AHL!  Go Checkers!
