The Title Race Is Back On And It Is Better Than Ever

Who would’ve thunk it? That Liverpool of all teams would blow a golden chance to put this title race out of reach. Heading into this 2 match week Liverpool had a 4 pt margin over Manchester City and low and behold Man City loses to Newcastle of all teams midweek. Liverpool had their match the next day so they were fully aware that they could go 7 points clear of City but Liverpool did what Liverpool always does when they are leading the league and draw 1-1 against Leicester. Then on the weekend Manchester City picks up a big 3-1 win against Arsenal and then Liverpool follows this match again the next day with another 1-1 draw, this time to West Ham. Liverpool were very lucky to even draw this game but they did so courtesy of a missed offsides on their lone goal by the reffing crew. So what could have been a 7 point lead for Liverpool after City slips up against Newcastle mid week has now turned into just a 3 point lead. It’s also worthy to note that City currently hold the tie breaker so Liverpool are just 1 loss and 1 City win away from being out of first place. City play tomorrow against Everton since this match was rescheduled from the upcoming EFL Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City. City also have a another match against Chelsea in the Premier League this Sunday. Liverpool are home against Bournemouth and really need a bounce back with Firmino and Salah after back to back clunkers. We all knew that Liverpool defense couldn’t last forever so now it’s time for the goalscorers to start showing out.

Oh Did I Forget To Mention……Tottenham Have Also Rejoined The Title Race

Are Tottenham better without Harry Kane? Might be time to get that narrative going as Tottenham have now won their last 3 Premier League matches without Kane, granted they lost both the EFL Cup semi to Chelsea and got knocked from the FA Cup by Crystal Palace but who’s counting. In all seriousness, Tottenham have held it together without their star striker in their Premier League matches so far but it’s been mostly due to the defense. The real shame for Tottenham is that their creeping back in the Premier League title race just after getting bounced from the EFL and FA Cup, so this will just get their fans hopes up for nothing. Because let’s be serious, Tottenham may only be 5 pts behind Liverpool but their is no chance they “actually” win the title in the end(I’d trust Liverpool to hold a 3 pt lead before I’d trust Tottenham to hold a 10 pt lead at this stage in the season). And they’re definitely getting bounced from Champions League by Borussia Dortmund. Another 3rd place trophyless season on the way for the Spurs.

Other Notes:

  • The transfer window ended but the real questions is did it ever start?

  • The one semi big name that did move over the window was Higuain to Chelsea and he scored a brace this past Saturday, albeit it was against Huddersfield.

  • Manchester United finally dropped points for the first time under their interim coach in a 2-2 draw against Burnley after 6 straight wins in the Premier League. That great run of form though and multiple slip ups by Chelsea and Arsenal now has United sitting just 2 pts outside of a top 4 spot

  • Holy hell does Huddersfield suck. Through 25 games, they’ve only scored 13 goals. Mounie and Depoitre should probably just quit football at this point. 42 games played between the pair and only 1 goal scored. Congrats Steve Mounie, you have the leg up with 1 goal.

  • EFL Cup update: Chelsea vs Manchester City in the final on Feb. 24

  • In the FA Cup we are down to the Rd of 16. Premier League Clubs still remaining Brighton(if they get past West Brom in the 2nd leg of Rd of 32), Watford, Man City, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Man United. Oh yeah, Chelsea and Man United drew each other and face off on Monday Feb. 18.

  • Till next time
