Chiefs Won’t Let Mahomes Play Basketball
I just came across this story and am really struggling to grasp the idea behind it. A video surfaced of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes playing pick-up basketball and all of Chiefs country suddenly went into panic mode. Worried that their star quarterback may get injured, they don’t want Mahomes having any fun during his offseason. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach shared this sentiment as he and Mahomes had a little talk about it and basically told Mahomes he wasn’t allowed to play basketball for fear of injury.
Let’s pump the breaks here. Patrick Mahomes is just playing a pickup basketball game. It’s not like he is channeling his inner Tony Hawk in a halfpipe or trying to replicate Shaun White’s moves on a snowboard. Playing basketball is totally harmless, and not to mention, a great way to stay in shape. Sure, there is a chance he could twist an ankle or catch an elbow, but there’s a chance for injury in almost anything you do in life. Just ask basketball player John Wall who ruptured his achilles after slipping and falling in his house. Next will they tell Mahomes he can’t drive his car because there is a chance he could get in a wreck? Are they going to tell him he can’t lift weights because he might pull a muscle? I understand wanting to protect your star quarterback from possible injury, but there’s a difference in being smart and being logical.
We see things like this far too often nowadays, where athletes are treated like china dolls. They are still human beings with a life, so let them enjoy their lives just so long as they are not doing anything too crazy. Mahomes is one of the best athletes in the world, I think he can handle playing pick-up basketball. I guess for everyone to be happy, they can just wrap Mahomes in bubble wrap and keep him locked indoors all offseason. That may contribute to him getting out of shape, but at least he won’t get injured.
