Chris Davis Continues to Set the Wrong Records
They say that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. The Orioles’ Chris Davis certainly won’t argue that claim. Dating back to last season, Chris Davis is 0 for his last 53 at-bats. This past Monday Davis broke the record of the most consecutive hitless at-bats, which stood at 46 and was set by Eugenio Velez in 2011. Velez’s streak spanned over two seasons as well, his coming in Giants and Dodgers uniforms.
Today Chris Davis broke another, similar record that nobody wants to hold. By going 0-3 in today’s game with a walk, Davis broke Tony Bernazard’s record for the most consecutive plate appearances without a hit. He had tied that record last night at 57, which Bernazard set with the Indians in 1984, and now holds the title with 61 consecutive plate appearances. The last hit registered by Chris Davis was on September 14 of last year, when he doubled off James Shields.
While the streak is frustrating for Davis and the Orioles, the fans continue to support him. They stand and cheer when he comes to the plate in desperate hope that he can break the dreadful slump. And all season long they’ve been left disappointed. He has had some unfortunate luck, however, hitting the ball well on several occasions, but the defense has had him played just right. But that’s baseball. You have to have luck on your side to be successful. His first hit will probably come from a weak infield hit or a swinging bunt. At this point though, Chris Davis would certainly take anything to have some numbers in that batting average column for 2019. I hope it comes soon, because slumps can give you the most frustrated and helpless feeling in the world. One thing’s for sure, Chris Davis is due.
