Historic Day for Oklahoma State Baseball
Last night was quite the ballgame between Oklahoma State and Kansas. The Big-12 Conference foes faced off in Lawrence, Kansas in a night the Jayhawks will want to soon forget. Oklahoma State bested Kansas with a final score of 27-6, but that wasn’t the only crazy stat of the game. The Cowboys hit a lot of home runs. A LOT of home runs.
The Cowboys launched a total of 12 home runs last night at Hoglund Ballpark, and as you can imagine, that is the new record for the Oklahoma State program, as well as the Big-12. The previous record was 11 when Oklahoma State did damage against Chicago State in 1999. As for the NCAA record, 12 home runs in a single game are tied for 4th with Belmont when they accomplished the feat in 2015. Alabama and Cal State Northridge both have hit 13 in a game, doing so in 1999 and 1996, respectively. The all-time record belongs to Georgia Southern, when they hit 14 in a game against Columbia in 2008.
Let’s not forget about the 27 runs though. That was the most runs scored in a conference game by Oklahoma State since scoring 28 against Iowa State in 1995, when the conference was the Big-8. It was also the most scored in a Big-12 Conference game since Oklahoma scored 29 against Kansas State in 2009. If you’re wondering about the all-time NCAA record in runs scored in a game like I was, however, I’ve got the answer for you. I did a little research and discovered, to my disbelief, that the most runs ever scored in a college baseball game was 50 by Nebraska against Chicago State in 1999. I can’t imagine how long that game lasted.
Oklahoma State players Christian Funk and Trevor Boone led the way for the Cowboys last night, tying the program record for home runs in a game with three. According to okstate.com, that feat has been accomplished 16 times now by 13 different players in program history. It was the second time that Boone has homered three times in a game, with him lighting up Baylor in a game last year. It’s always interesting to me how the next game goes for both teams after an outrageous game like this. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the final score was something like 1-0 or 2-1. That’s just how baseball goes. The two teams face off again today at 2:00 p.m.
