Wells Fargo Championship DraftKings Preview
The PGA Tour is coming close to home with the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. The weather looks to be great for the event, as temperatures are estimated to be in the mid-80’s and partly cloudy appears to be the forecast for the weekend. The purse for the tournament is set at $7.70 millions dollars. The PGA Tour is entering a city with heavy hearts after the tragic UNC Charlotte campus shooting. I am sure the event will be an exciting one and hopefully it is one that will lift up this community as well.
Quail Hollow was founded in 1959, and has been hosting the PGA Tour since 2003. Rory McIlroy holds the course record shooting a (-21) for the event in 2015. The final three holes of the tournament are known as the “Green Mile” as it is host to some of the toughest holes in golf. The favorite to win the Wells Fargo Championship is two-time winner Rory McIlroy at 6/1.
My strategy when it comes to picking golfers normally involves a nice mixture of “big-hitters” and great short-game players. Rory McIroy ($11,800) is the favorite and I do not believe this is a fluke. One of the best drivers in the game…Rory is averaging nearly 313 yards per drive which will come in “handy” at Quail Hollow. The two-time winner has been in great form as of late, and I see this run continuing. In the putting department, I will be choosing two bargain players that both contain a 45% one-putt average. Peter Malnati ($6,700) and Vaughn Taylor ($6,600) are great values. Malnati has been on a tear as of late, finishing in the top-25 at the Valero Texas Open and the RBC Heritage events. He has not missed a cut since 2/7 at Pebble Beach, and I look for him to be a great choice to shock the field this weekend at 175/1 odds. Taylor is a great putter who has two top-10’s this year in the PGA Tour, and I think his putting prowess will help him in damage control here.
Charles Howell III ($8,400) is a name that comes to mind when choosing a solid DFS lineup. Howell has made 12/14 cuts and normally hangs around in the top 40. I will be finishing up my lineup with Tony Finau ($9,300) and Matt Jones ($7,200). Finau is coming off of a top-5 finish at The Masters and is so close to his first victory of the 2019 season. Matt Jones is another solid choice who has finished in the top-40 in each of his last 4 appearances on the PGA Tour.
