WWE Power Rankings: Week of May 9th
Welcome to another week of WWE Power Rankings on The Sports Chief. It sounds like a broken record, but this was another relatively uneventful week in WWE programming. Each show had good parts, but yet again, SmackDown was more interesting. Some would say that the RAW episode this week was one of the worst in history and honestly, I wouldn’t argue with those people. A new concept was introduced this week. The Wild Card option is a new rule that allows superstars from each brand to appear on the other show, but it is limited. I personally don’t think that this will help boost ratings, but it is early in the process, so we have to give it a little time. Here are my Power Rankings for this week.
- 10: Bray Wyatt (4)
There was another edition of Firefly Fun House this week and it had a shocking turn of events. Wyatt lost 6 spots this week, but I may have ranked him a little high in the last couple of weeks looking back. I still think it is the most interesting product on the WWE airwaves at the moment, but I’m still interested to see how they ease him into the ring. RIP Rambling Rabbit.
- 9: Braun Strowman (NR)
I debated even putting him in the rankings this week, but it was another difficult week, so I just went for it. I wanted to go back and check rankings for the year and I was surprised to find out that this is the first time Strowman has been on the Rankings this year. It’s crazy to think he was in a major title feud for the better part of 2018, but has almost been nonexistent this year. On RAW, he threw Sami Zayn in a dumpster and a dump truck carried him away, you know, usual stuff. Seriously though, I can’t believe this is the first time he has been ranked in 2019.
- 8: Becky Lynch (1)
After claiming the number one spot last week, Lynch has fallen down 7 spots this week. It’s not that she had a bad week, but she wasn’t featured as much. She only appeared on RAW to confront Lacey Evans, but that was it. I fully expect her to be back in the Top 5 next week, because The Man won’t stay down for long.
- 7: Lars Sullivan (9)
Lars Sullivan was arguably the superstar with the best segment this week, but has yet to be in an in-ring contest. This is literally the only thing keeping him out of the Top 5. He attacked No Way Jose this week and they are going in the right direction with Sullivan at the moment. We’ll see if this continues, but so far so good.
- 6: AJ Styles (7)
Styles appeared on both shows and lost both matches. He had a part in the wild card introduction and even had a title match on SmackDown. On RAW, he fought in a tag match with Seth Rollins facing Baron Corbin and Bobby Lashley. He was in the Triple Threat main event on Tuesday facing Sami Zayn and the WWE Champ. At Money in the Bank, he will compete against Rollins for the Universal Championship.
- 5: Roman Reigns (3)
Roman is in the Top 5 again, but is more on the basis of him being on RAW and the controversy surrounding his appearance. This was only to introduce the wild card concept brought out by Mr. McMahon, but he did compete in a match. The match wasn’t spectacular against Drew McIntyre, but he did earn a victory by DQ. Look for Reigns to ease his way back into the main title picture as he maintains his status as the face of the WWE.
- 4: Lacey Evans (8)
Squash matches against unknown opponents usually aren’t a strong reason for endorsement in the Power Rankings, but in this case it was perfect. Lacey Evans appeared on RAW to face an unknown opponent and deliver a promo to the women competing in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match in a couple weeks. This gave her a proper opportunity to showcase her finisher as an unpredictable and hard-hitting move. I don’t think she really stands a chance in her match against Becky Lynch, but I think it will be a very entertaining match.
- 3: Daniel Bryan and Rowan (NR)
Daniel Bryan had a match in the main event of RAW in what was a rematch for the WWE Championship. Bryan was out of action for nearly a month after an injury he sustained at WrestleMania, but he looked strong on both shows this week. He did earn a title this week, but it wasn’t the WWE Championship. He and tag team partner, Rowan, became the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions after The Hardys were forced to vacate the titles. This was one of the more interesting segments on either show and we’ll see how their reign as champs will turn out in the coming weeks.
- 2: Sami Zayn (6)
Zayn appeared on both shows, but he was really dialed in on SmackDown. In all honesty, he needs to be on the Blue Brand, but for now him being on RAW is fine. He was thrown in a dumpster on RAW and competed in the main event of SmackDown… Good booking right? His efforts on Tuesday are the ones I’m mainly focusing on though. He looked really good against the WWE Champion and AJ Styles. I hope they don’t ruin his character coming up, but I’m preparing for the worst and hoping for the best with Zayn.
- 1: Kofi Kingston (2)
For the first time since March 20th, Kofi Kingston is back in the number one spot. This honestly shouldn’t be the case because he has been such a big deal in the last few months, but since February 13th, he has only missed the Top 4 twice. He has been a huge player on TV, but I’m going to be honest, I thought he was going to lose his title this week. He defended the WWE Championship on each show and was victorious on both occasions. A lot of fans had a problem with Kofi taking numerous finishers, but dishing out only one or two to win the match. I personally have no problem with this if the story is told right and I feel like it was. I’m having my doubts that he will walk out of MITB as champion, but I hope he still is. It seems weird that he is defending his title on nearly every show he appears on. I consider this as an indicator that his title reign could be nearing the end, but I think he has more than earned an opportunity for a substantial title reign.
