After a thrilling double-overtime win against the defending Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies, the Charlotte Checkers are going to the Calder Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history.  It was Morgan Geekie who sent the puck past the Marlies’ goaltender in 2OT, that gave Charlotte the 4-2 series-clinching victory and the opportunity to continue the team’s historic season.  After putting together the best regular season in franchise history, it’s only fitting the Checkers will have the opportunity to secure their first Calder Cup in franchise history.  That opportunity begins tonight.

At 6:00 p.m. tonight, the Checkers will host Game 1 of the best of 7 series at Bojangles Coliseum.  Their opponent: The Chicago Wolves.  Although the Wolves play in Chicago, they are an affiliate of NHL’s newest franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights.  Throughout the playoffs so far the Wolves have an 11-6-0 record, while the Checkers have an 11-3-0 record.  In the regular season the Wolves collected 98 points on a 44-22-6 record, while the Checkers had 110 points with a 51-17-7 record.  The Wolves are out of the Central Division and the Checkers play in the Atlantic.  The two teams did not face off against each other in the regular season.

Game 1 will be tonight and Game 2 will be tomorrow night, both at Bojangles Coliseum.  Games 3-5 will take place on the road in Chicago on Wednesday, Thursday, and next Saturday (if necessary).  If games 6 and 7 are necessary, they will be back in Charlotte (June 13 & 14th) to determine the Calder Cup champion.  This is definitely an extraordinary opportunity for the Charlotte Checkers, as well as the Charlotte community, which will guarantee Bojangles Coliseum will be packed and an exciting place to be.  Make sure to visit the Checkers website to get your tickets early and be a part of history.  Let’s go Checkers!
