Stomping Grounds Predictions

We’re only two weeks removed from Super Showdown and it’s time to get things rolling again. There is genuinely a lot of disinterest in this particular PPV, because a decent amount of the matches have been done either recently or many times in the past. That isn’t to say that there aren’t any worthwhile matches, because there are. Stomping Grounds is taking place in Tacoma, Washington and the event will have 9 matches. The Kickoff Show matches haven’t been announced and it will be interesting to see where the matches fall in order. Also, the Special Guest Referee hasn’t been announced for the Universal Championship match, so it will be interesting to see who that is. Here are my predictions and hopefully we see an interesting and fun PPV on Sunday night.

*Card is likely not in order

*Predicted winners are bolded

-      Men’s Tag Team Match: SmackDown Tag Team Championship

Daniel Bryan and Rowan (C) vs. Heavy Machinery

WWE

WWE

I think this will be a pretty cool match. Otis of Heavy Machinery is one of the most entertaining superstars in the WWE and I think that will be showcased in full effect Sunday night, however, I don’t think they walk out as unified champions. They are currently holding the Yolo County Tag Team Championship, which is a made-up title. This seems like it should be a squash match, but I think it will actually be a solid match.

-      Men’ Tag Team Match

The New Day vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

WWE

WWE

This match could go either way, but I think New Day get the win here. Zayn and Owens are favorites here, but not by a great margin. This is just a typical match to keep the competitors involved relevant. I feel like we are seeing more and more of that here lately with no direction to actually push performers to the top. This should be an entertaining match, but I don’t think it is one that will blow me away.

-      Men’s Triple Threat Match: Cruiserweight Championship

Tony Nese (C) vs. Akira Tozawa vs. Drew Gulak

WWE

WWE

The champion is a heavy favorite in this one at -310, but I going to go against the odds here. I think Gulak takes the win here and become Cruiserweight Champion for the first time in his career. This would be a good opportunity to shake things up on 205 Live. Odds are in total favor of the champions at Stomping Grounds, so I think they will at least have one title change. On Sunday, Tony Nese would enter the match with a 73-day title reign, which is a decent amount, so I think he loses it at Stomping Grounds.

-      Men’s Singles Match: United States Championship

Samoa Joe (C) vs. Ricochet

WWE

WWE

I would love to see Ricochet capture the US title in this one, but I just don’t think the timing is right. Samoa Joe just acquired the championship not even three weeks ago, so I don’t feel like it will happen this early into his reign. Samoa Joe is the type of performer that it is a big deal to get a victory over, even though you can’t actually tell it based off of his win/loss record since joining the WWE. He is one of the most underappreciated superstars in the company and a title reign that goes on for a decent amount of time is something that I think he deserves. With that being said, Ricochet is somewhat fresh to the main roster and seeing him win the title would be an interesting twist, but I don’t think it happens, yet. Joe is also a pretty big favorite in this one.

-      Women’s Singles Match: RAW Women’s Championship

Becky Lynch (C) vs. Lacey Evans

WWE

WWE

Even though Becky Lynch is a rather large favorite, this match could go either way in my book. It is showing at the moment that Lynch is better suited for the underdog role rather than the odds on favorite role. Many are saying that she is losing relevancy and to a certain extent, I would agree. I don’t put much of the blame on her though. She hasn’t been booked well at all, since the WrestleMania main event. I think they will keep the title on her for a little while, but if they do decide to shake things up on Sunday, I think it will happen in this match.

-      Men’s Singles Match

Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre

WWE

WWE

We saw this match at WrestleMania 35 and we are getting it again just 2 ½ months later. I absolutely hate that Drew McIntyre is being paired with Shane McMahon. He has so much potential, but I feel like it is being ruined. That sentence sounds like a broken record in the WWE, but that is truly the way it is. Roman is a slight favorite in the match, but Drew McIntyre is going down the dark path of irrelevancy very quickly. This would be the perfect opportunity to regain some meaningful attention by getting a win here. Also, Roman won at WrestleMania, so I think it makes sense for McIntyre to win here.

-      Women’s Singles Match: SmackDown Women’s Championship

Bayley (C) vs. Alexa Bliss

WWE

WWE

Many fans are calling this the most interesting match on the card and I think they are right. At the moment, with the exception of one more match, Bayley has the highest odds to retain. This feud has been very solid and honestly could be a match that could go a number of different ways. Bayley has been a great champion, so I don’t think she loses here, but Alexa is one the best female competitors in the company. Also, if Bayley retains, they could somehow get Nikki Cross involved in the title picture, which would be interesting.

-      Men’s Steel Cage Match: WWE Championship

Kofi Kingston (C) vs. Dolph Ziggler

WWE

WWE

This feud has turned kind of bland in my opinion. I’m expecting a really good match here, but it is fairly predictable. Steel Cage matches are historically known for ending feuds and I hope that is the case here. Ziggler’s “It should’ve been me” shtick is wearing off very fast and I just don’t think he has anything more to provide to this feud. We saw this match literally two weeks ago, so there is a lot of disinterest in this contest. Hopefully they put on a good match, but we will see. Kofi Kingston is an astounding -1260 favorite to retain on Sunday

-      Men’s Singles Match w/Special Guest Referee: Universal Championship

Seth Rollins (C) vs. Baron Corbin

WWE

WWE

Speaking of matches that happened just two weeks ago, here is another one. They had a good match at Super Showdown, but the only reason this match is intriguing is because of the unannounced special guest referee. Some believe it could be Brock Lesnar, Bray Wyatt, but whoever it is, Baron Corbin gets to choose. That is what makes this so difficult. Who would Baron Corbin align himself with? Maybe he brings back a legend, or maybe it is someone who is making a comeback. Who knows? Anyway, I think Rollins retains regardless.
