WWE Power Rankings: Week of July 25th
It was a big week for WWE, but I thought that they fell significantly short of expectations. RAW Reunion was an interesting opportunity to put over current talent, but they barely did it. It was nice to see all of the legends back for one show, but a good part of the show was putting over themselves rather than the current product. The WWE has a superstar crisis on their hands and the reason is because they won’t allow it. I think I can speak for fans when I say that we would rather cheer on a particular superstar over a brand. WWE’s attempts to push their brand over their talent is getting tiring. Starting in October, the WWE will face their biggest competition in over 20 years and the fact is, people will jump ship if they’re not happy with the product. I love the WWE, but it is frustrating how much they rely on nostalgia and what the Attitude Era was. Don’t get me wrong, that was a fun time in the WWE and I love the history of the WWE, but nearly all of the superstars in the Attitude Era aren’t currently performing. There is absolutely no reason that they should rely on legends provide intrigue to the product and they better start putting over current talent or they’re going to sink. The list looks pretty similar to last week, because of the reunion show, but here are my WWE Power Rankings.
- 10: Seth Rollins (5)
The picture you see above is exactly what was wrong about the RAW Reunion. You have Seth Rollins, arguably one of the biggest stars in the company, in the ring with DX and The Outsiders. Instead of putting Rollins over, the moment was about DX. Rollins gets in the Top 10, because he was featured a good amount on Monday night. It was reported that it was supposed to be Ricochet instead of Rollins in this spot on RAW, but still, Ricochet is one of the rising stars and it would’ve been equally embarrassing if he were in this scenario.
- 9: Roman Reigns (NR)
Roman was featured on both shows and captures the 9 spot in this week’s rankings. He challenged and beat Samoa Joe on RAW and it was the best match on the show. He also went against Kevin Owens in the main event, but it ended in a no contest and both superstars got the better of Shane McMahon. It is nice to see that they’re not rushing Roman Reigns into the title picture, but I don’t think he will be restricted much longer. Look for him to be in title contention pretty soon.
- 8: Ember Moon (NR)
I had to look back at my notes to confirm it, but this is the first time that Ember Moon has made the Top 10 this year. She had a match against Charlotte Flair and won. The match wasn’t what it could’ve been, but for a SmackDown match, it was decent. The segment was bigger than the match and Ember Moon looked strong here. She was standing tall with Flair and the SmackDown Women’s Champion both laying on the mat. It is nice to see Moon getting a chance like this, because she is one of the best talents in the WWE.
- 7: Drake Maverick/R-Truth (7)
Yet again, these two superstars are shining. They were a bright spot in the reunion show and they continue to have a fun storyline. If you are just following their antics on TV, then you are missing a good chunk of what they do. If you follow along what they do on Social Media, then you know why they are impressive to a lot of fans. There were a lot of new 24/7 champions this week, including some first-time female champs, but Truth and Maverick were the stars of the whole 24/7 chase on RAW this week. This was a fun way to incorporate legends and put over current product.
- 6: Shinsuke Nakamura (NR)
Last week, I regretted not putting Nakamura in the Top 10, but I wasn’t going to skip him this week. He had a big non-title win on SmackDown against Apollo Crews in what was a good match. He won the Intercontinental title at Extreme Rules. This was a great way to feature the Intercontinental Championship without putting it on the line and honestly this gave Apollo Crews some much needed airtime, despite taking the loss. Hopefully we see more of this from Nakamura, because he is a great talent that just needs a little TV time.
- 5: Kofi Kingston (2)
Another week, another Top 5 for Kofi Kingston. In all honesty, I debated putting him at 5 because he basically reiterated everything that he has done and said over the past few months, but I couldn’t really think of a better option here. He challenged Randy Orton to a match at SummerSlam and I’m glad we are going to get this match. I feel like I say this every week, but I don’t know how much longer we will see Kingston as the champ. It feels like each match could be when he loses it. I think this is actually a good thing though. Right now, I think the momentum is with Orton, but it should be a great showing between the two vets and it was cool to see them acknowledging fan concerns here. .
- 4: Randy Orton (4)
Speaking of Orton, he stays in the Top 5 for another week. He obviously accepted Kingston’s challenge and will face the WWE Champion at SummerSlam. The segment was one of the best of the week for both shows. Like I said earlier, I think Orton has the momentum here, but things can obviously change over the course of a few weeks. We’ll see how it unfolds, it should get very interesting.
- 3: Dolph Ziggler (NR)
This was one of the rare occurrences of where current talent got over on a legend. This segment was near perfect and I don’t really know how to process what might happen here. Shawn Michaels was a guest on Miz TV and Ziggler interrupted the segment. He called out HBK over his match performance in Saudi Arabia last November and Miz TV ended with Ziggler super-kicking Michaels. My frustrations with Michaels coming back have diminished, so I really don’t mind if he has another match. Ziggler and Michaels is a match that I think a lot of fans wouldn’t mind seeing. I don’t believe it will happen, but it could be a decent match.
- 2: Bray Wyatt (6)
I wanted to give the current talent involved in getting the better of a legend higher rankings this week and Bray Wyatt probably had the best moment on RAW this week. Mick Foley was reminiscing the time when he won the WWE Championship on RAW, the lights flickered and The Fiend appeared. Wyatt proceeded to use the Mandible Claw on Foley. It was truly a great moment and moving forward, I hope to see Wyatt featured in these kinds of spots. He also appeared on SmackDown to accept Finn Bálor’s match challenge for SummerSlam. He did so in a new episode of Firefly Fun House. Wyatt’s character is far and away the most unique in WWE and he could be a special superstar moving forward.
- 1: Kevin Owens (1)
Same old song and dance, Owens is back at number 1. This is the first time in my Power Rankings that there has been a consecutive 3-time number one. This Tuesday, Owens kicked off and ended SmackDown yet again. He has been the biggest star for the last month and it looks like he will face Shane McMahon at SummerSlam. If Owens loses, he has to quit the WWE. Barring a weird scenario, Owens isn’t likely going to lose. Many people are hating Shane McMahon these days, but I liked how he presented himself this Tuesday. He is really embracing this heel gig, but it is difficult to say how long he will keep it up.
Yacs.
