WWE Power Rankings: Week of August 29th

With just a little over 2 weeks until Clash of Champions, PPV matches are getting established. Both shows weren’t great this week, but I like the fact that they focused on the King of the Ring matches. A lot of the bigger players weren’t involved this week and I feel like my rankings will reflect that this week. It was a weird week, but meaningful to the progress of stories. Here are my rankings for this week.

-      10: Roman Reigns (NR)

WWE

WWE

Roman is not on this list for having a great week, but he is on here for having a meaningful week. His storyline at the moment is a big portion of the shows, but this week it was not really interesting. Hopefully there is more to this story, because it has honestly been pretty flat so far.

-      9: Sasha Banks (6)

WWE

WWE

Banks kicked off RAW, but I thought it fell flat. After having an impressive return to TV a couple weeks ago, her involvement hasn’t been great. It clearly isn’t the time for Becky Lynch to drop the title, but crazier things have happened.

-      8: Ricochet (NR)

WWE

WWE

Ricochet makes it back to the Top 10 this week after and excellent match with Drew McIntyre. He is moving on to the next round after defeating McIntyre this week. Every time Ricochet steps into the ring, you know you’re going to watch a great and electric match, regardless of who he is facing. He will face Samoa Joe next week on RAW.

-      7: Cedric Alexander (NR)

WWE

WWE

Much like Ricochet, Cedric Alexander looked impressive this week in his King of the Ring matchup against Sami Zayn. Alexander is a great addition for the RAW roster and moving forward, I can see a US title reign in his near future. I don’t think he will advance to the next round, but I expect to see another good match next week against Baron Corbin.

-      6: Baron Corbin (NR)

WWE

WWE

Before the King of the Ring tournament started, I named Baron Corbin my favorite to win the tournament and I think he established my thoughts this week. He faced The Miz this week and I really enjoyed watching this match. Baron Corbin winning this tournament makes total sense and he could pull off the King persona perfectly.

-      5: Ali (NR)

WWE

WWE

Entering the Top 5 for the first time in quite a while is Ali. He and Buddy Murphy had a match on SmackDown and I think it was the match of the week. Both competitors are fighting to gain more credibility and I think they did on Tuesday. The both looked great, but the Power Rankings spot goes to Ali because he advanced to the next round. He will face Elias in the next round and I think he has a decent shot to move on.

-      4: Bayley (9)

WWE

WWE

The SmackDown Women’s Champion picked up two wins this week and it earned her a spot in the Top 5. Bayley has been a decent, but forgettable champion thus far. I don’t really fault her though. She and Charlotte Flair will have a match in a couple of weeks and if Bayley can pick up the win, I think her reign will gain the credibility that it needs, but I’m not expecting it.

-      3: Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode (NR, NR)

WWE

WWE

This make-shift tag team absolutely came out of nowhere, but had a meaningful impact on RAW this week. I thought this surprise formation was great and I think that this is the kind of stuff that makes RAW and SmackDown interesting. It gives fans more unexpected scenarios and it gives guys like Robert Roode a chance to shine. These two will face Strowman and Rollins in a couple weeks and I’m interested to see how that plays out.

-      2: Randy Orton (4)

Orton totally got the better of Kofi Kingston this week and the momentum is in his favor at the moment. I think next week will be a different story, but Orton delivered a great opening on SmackDown and he picked up a win against Big E later in the show. Orton could legitimately win the title in a couple weeks, but Kofi has had a great run, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next couple weeks.

-      1: Braun Strowman (1)

WWE

WWE

Although the finish of the show on Monday night was a little weird, the one who stood tall was Strowman and it earned him the number one spot this week. It looks like they have big plans for Strowman in a couple weeks in front of his home crowd, but the thing about it is, they’re not turning him heel, which I think is an interesting move. I feel like Strowman deserved this kind of run last year, but I’m glad to see that he is remaining a big player. I honestly think he could win the Universal Championship in couple weeks, but I want to see what happens on RAW next week between he and Rollins.
