AEW Power Rankings: Week of January 10th, 2020
AEW won the ratings feud this week again and it was another entertaining show. They are seemingly doing most things right in the beginning stages and I’m interested to see where they’re at towards the end of 2020. This appeared to be another build up week for the upcoming PPV on Leap Day. Things are heating up for the upcoming storylines and each week leading up to Revolution should build more and more anticipation. Here are the Power Rankings for the week.
- 5: Jurassic Express
The Dinosaurs and Best Friends had a very fun, and energetic match on Wednesday. Jurassic Express picked up the win, but even though it wasn’t very meaningful in the short term, this could be a sign of a big 2020 for the group. These two groups are the most fun on the roster and their acts are over at the moment. Orange Cassidy puts Best Friends over even more than they already are and the Jurassic Express is gaining more traction each week. It will be interesting to see if these teams win the tag titles within the year.
- 4: Riho
The match between she and Kris Statlander wasn’t a great one, but it accomplished what it needed to. Statlander has been on fire since her Dynamite debut, but I feel like they overshot what was necessary in this situation. We knew Statlander wasn’t going to win, but her prior commitment last week put less of an impact on the last couple of weeks. Riho picks up another successful title defense and she may have the most successful title defenses in all of AEW. She will eventually get beat, but for now, she has been a solid champ.
- 3: Cody and Dustin Rhodes
It was fun to see the Rhodes brothers teaming up again on Wednesday. This time it was against the highly touted Lucha Bros. Cody and Dustin picked up a big win here. I say this every time he competes, but it is great watching Dustin Rhodes getting to shine. The addition of Arn Anderson in the storyline between MJF and Cody is another great layer in the feud and it should be one of, if not the, most talked about feud in 2020.
- 2: Hangman Page and Kenny Omega
Page and Omega picked up a nice win against Private Party in the opener of Dynamite and all appears to be well between Omega and Page, for now anyway. I fully expect there to be a split between Omega and Page within the next couple of months, if not weeks, and the feud has a ton of potential. A lot of people probably thought Omega was going to be in the title picture by now, but the role he is playing on screen is perfect at the moment.
- 1: Jon Moxley
Moxley is the hottest performer in AEW at the moment, if not all of wrestling. He can do no wrong right now. I fully expected him to decline the offer to join The Inner Circle, but I didn’t expect the swerve angle they pulled. Before AEW started their TV show, I knew Moxley had the potential to be the biggest star in the company and we are seeing that potential on full display each week.
