AEW Power Rankings: Week of January 6th 2020

I’m a little late on the AEW and WWE Power Rankings this week, so they’re going to be shorter than normal. AEW’s Homecoming show happened on New Year’s Day and it was a decent show. The Top 5 this week I feel basically reflects the direction that AEW is heading in 2020. Here are the first Power Rankings of the year.

  • 5: MJF

MJF was as solid as ever on the mic this week and he lands in the Top 5 this week. He named a few interesting stipulations for his upcoming match with Cody next month and it should be a great show next week to see what Cody says.

  • 4: Jon Moxley

Other than arguably Chris Jericho, there hasn’t been a stronger competitor in AEW than Jon Moxley. It appears that they’re going to ride out the possibility of him joining The Inner Circle. It would shock me to see him join and the impending matchup between he and Jericho next month should be interesting. Also, his match with Trent on Dynamite last week, was solid and his interaction with Orange Cassidy was awesome. He also had a big week at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in Japan

  • 3: Cody

Cody opened the show last Wednesday against Darby Allin and the match was great. I feel like the match was more about keeping Darby Allin on TV rather than getting Cody’s hype up. It was a solid showing and his matchup with MJF has potential to be the best feud of 2020.

  • 2: Riho

Riho hasn’t been on TV in a while and I feel like this match was a long time coming. She faced Britt Baker, Nyla Rose, and Hikaru Shida for the AEW Women’s Championship and successfully defended her title. Riho will face another tough test next week when she will have to defend her title against Kris Statlander.

  • 1: The Elite

Starting the New Year with The Elite going over in the main event is far from a shock, yet it was great. It was the match of the night by a good margin. The Young Bucks appears like they will be immediate title contenders when the opportunity strikes and the same goes for Kenny Omega as well.
