Song of the Day: New Mexico
Today’s Song of the Day is inspired by a history theme. On this day (January 6) in 1912, New Mexico was granted statehood into the United States as the 47th state. The territory first became U.S. property in 1848 after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. Throughout the following decades, resistance from Apache and Navaho natives brought bloodshed to the region, but with the surrender of Apache chief Geronimo in 1886, resistance stopped and population boomed with the new Santa Fe Railroad and widespread ranching efforts. So today’s song of the day will represent our nation’s 47th state, the song titled “New Mexico” from the legend Johnny Cash. Enjoy.
