AEW Full Gear (2020) Results and Reaction

Full Gear was on Saturday night and I have to say, it was another really solid show. There were a couple title changes and those were exciting to see. There was also a lot of things that I’m interested to see continue. Some fans complained that the show was a little too long, but I thought it was fine considering the number of great matches that were involved. Here are the results of the show and my reaction to it all.

-       Women’s Singles Match: NWA World Women’s Championship

Serena Deeb (C) over Allysin Kay

This was the only match in the Buy-In portion of the show and I thought that these ladies did a tremendous job. Lately, the NWA Women’s Division has been booked better on AEW than the AEW Women’s Division on AEW and this was no different. Granted, not as many fans know about the NWA storylines, but as an appreciation for great in-ring action, I don’t think I’m alone in saying that NWA Women’s Wrestling seems better booked. This was a solid 10-minute contest here, especially for something in a pre-show.

-       Men’s Singles Match: AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament Final

Kenny Omega over “Hangman” Adam Page

This match and result came as no surprise to anyone and it was everything that it was anticipated to be. I don’t think there could’ve been a better opener on the card than this match and we get to see Kenny Omega challenge for the AEW World Championship. My prediction is that Omega gets the belt in his first try. I don’t know what is next for Page, but I think they can use him in basically any scenario at this point and feel safe that it will succeed.

-       Men’s Singles Match

Orange Cassidy over John Silver

I thought that the Dark Order was going to be heavily involved in this match, but they weren’t. I really enjoyed this match. Nothing was at stake, and it was just a fun match between AEW’s most loveable performer and another guy that showed a lot of potential. I personally think John Silver needs to be a singles performer from here on out. Moving forward creatively, there are a lot of things that can be done with Orange Cassidy and fans will enjoy it. I liked this match and I want to see more things from these two competitors.

-       Men’s Singles Match: TNT Championship

Darby Allin over Cody Rhodes (C) (with Arn Anderson)

It was revealed that Cody earned his last name back from the WWE during sometime at the end of last week and he mentioned that he probably wouldn’t use it anymore, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. I’m glad that he got it back. Regarding the match though, this was an awesome display. It wasn’t the most technically savvy match, but it was a match that told a great story. I predicted that Cody would win the match, but as I was making my predictions, I was having doubts. It is good to see Darby win the belt and it is good to see a minor belt mean something for a change. There are a lot of similarities between he and Jeff Hardy and fans will treat Darby right as long as he treats them right. I’m excited to see what is next for both competitors.

-       Women’s Singles Match: AEW Women’s World Championship

Hikaru Shida (C) over Nyla Rose (with Vickie Guerrero)

AEW

AEW

This was the worst match on the card and it wasn’t even close. I may be a little harsh on it, but going into the match, I wasn’t interested in it at all. It wasn’t a horrible match, but it wasn’t good. They had a solid contest at Double or Nothing this year, but this one did not live up to their first meeting. Vickie Guerrero berating Nyla in the ring after the match made absolutely no sense. There haven’t been good stories and that is only hurting the in-ring action. Shida has been great as champion, but her competition hasn’t been there. Hopefully things turn around for the Women’s Division.

-       Men’s Tag Team Match: AEW World Tag Team Championship

The Young Bucks over FTR (C)                       *MATCH OF THE NIGHT*

AEW

AEW

The Young Bucks finally claimed tag team gold in AEW and it is about time. I thought they should’ve been the inaugural champs, but I realize that they didn’t want to make the tag team division all about them. I thought this was going to be the match of the night going into the show and I wasn’t disappointed. It was a tremendous tag team match and one that lived up to every bit of potential that came with it. It will be exciting to see what the bucks can do with the belts.

-       The Elite Deletion Match

Matt Hardy over Sammy Guevara

I didn’t know how this match would turn out, but I enjoyed it. Most people complained that the match was too long, but I thought it was fine. They’ve only done a couple cinematic matches in AEW and Matt Hardy is the king of these matches. The match was entertaining and we even saw special appearances from Hurricane Helms and Gangrel. I am a Matt Hardy fan and things have been great since his arrival to AEW, but I think this match proves that good things could be on the horizon for Hardy and Guevara losing here doesn’t hurt him, in fact, quite the opposite.

-       Men’s Singles Match

MJF (with Wardlow) over Chris Jericho

AEW

AEW

MJF is now in the Inner Circle and things could get very interesting. I wasn’t expecting to see MJF accept entry into the group, but I knew either way, it was going to be entertaining. MJF and Jericho is money regardless if they are feuding or allied forces. The match wasn’t the best of the night, but it was one of the more interesting contests at Full Gear. I don’t know what is next, but I’m excited to see MJF and Jericho team up in the near future.

-       Men’s “I Quit” Match: AEW World Championship

Jon Moxley (C) over Eddie Kingston

AEW

AEW

I didn’t have huge expectations for this match, but it was awesome. Some may feel like Moxley is in too many no-DQ style matches, but I think that is what makes him unique. In fact, both competitors are better suited for no-DQ matches. It was a great match and moving forward, it appears that Moxley and Omega are going to face each other next, but when is undetermined. I hope Moxley continues to add more to his tremendous title reign, but it looks like his days may be numbered as champ.
