WWE Power Rankings: Week of March 16th 2020
It sure has been a crazy week around the world, but wrestling is still going. To keep up, I want to put out as much wrestling content as possible. Last week, the episodes were perfectly fine. The biggest show of the week was SmackDown for sure. No audience was a little bit of a throw off, but I feel like you appreciate the art of pro wrestling in a setting like that. It appears that for the foreseeable future, we will be getting our WWE product from the Performance Center, including WrestleMania 36, which is going to be odd, but huge respect to the WWE for continuing to entertain the fans during this time. Here are my Rankings for last week.
- 10: Drew McIntyre (5)
The number one contender for the WWE Championship is remaining strong from his Rumble win. He picked up a rather quick win over Erick Rowan last Monday on RAW. We found out that Rowan had a tarantula in his cage in sort of an anti-climactic way and McIntyre destroyed the cage last Monday. I don’t think Rowan was at the point where destroy the cage would impact the WWE Universe either way, so not an awesome segment, but one that proved a point.
- 9: Riddick Moss (NR)
This is the first time Moss has been on my Power Rankings ever. He has been the 24/7 Champion for 33 days, which is the longest reign by nearly 2 weeks. I don’t know what they’re trying with this, but a weekly defense, rather than utter chaos I feel is a better way to book this title. This is giving Moss some TV time, which is always a positive, but I guess we’ll find out if he continues to hang on to the belt.
- 8: Sasha Banks and Bayley (NR)
Banks and Bayley faced Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss in the opening match of the first audience-less SmackDown on Friday night. Not that their win was that meaningful, but it was awesome to see everyone continue to their business. It is not clear what they’re doing with the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania, but Paige was scheduled to be on SmackDown, so maybe she knows something we don’t? I guess we’ll find out this Friday.
- 7: Kabuki Warriors (NR)
The WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions defeated the team of Liv Morgan and Natalya last Monday and the match was pretty good. I would like to see the women’s tag titles featured more, but not shocked to see that they haven’t been. Both of these ladies could clearly be in the Women’s title picture, but for now if guess they be stuck in the tag division for a little while longer.
- 6: Charlotte Flair (NR)
While both Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair got shots in last week, I think Charlotte came out on top. It will be interesting to see how the next 3 weeks go, but I’m kind of expecting Charlotte to win the title at WrestleMania. Ripley has had a good reign, but Charlotte going back to NXT would be huge for the women’s division, if only for a limited time.
- 5: John Cena/Bray Wyatt (NR, NR)
If you didn’t check out the last segment of SmackDown on Friday, check it out now. Examples like this are big reasons why we love pro wrestling. The chemistry between Wyatt and Cena is phenomenal and I’m excited to see this match at WrestleMania. I expect Wyatt to get the win, due to the fact that many people thought he should’ve defeated Cena a few years ago at WrestleMania. This will definitely be his chance, but this time The Fiend is the glaring difference from then until now.
- 4: The Broserweights (NR)
The Broserweights had a successful title defense on last week’s NXT show. They defeated the Undisputed Era in a rematch from the last TakeOver event. These two have good chemistry as a team and I never thought that they would be that great of a team. They are almost polar opposites, but they are entertaining. I don’t know how long this reign will last or who they will even face next, but so far they’re doing a solid job as champs.
- 3: Keith Lee (NR)
The NXT North American Champion retained his title last Wednesday against Cameron Grimes. Here’s another title that I’m unsure who will be challenging for it at TakeOver. Keith Lee’s reign hasn’t been bad, but it feels like its missing something. I guess we’ll find out his next challenger in the coming weeks.
- 2: Edge (NR)
Edge’s return to RAW last week was a nice touch and I feel like this is the most anticipated match going into WrestleMania. I never thought that I would see Edge back in a ring again, but we will get to witness his comeback in just a matter of weeks. It will be interesting to see how having no crowd will factor into this, but still, I think it will be a solid showing.
- 1: WWE
I couldn’t help but make the WWE the number one this week. While most outlets are cancelled and all sports in America are suspended, WWE is still putting live product on TVs and I think that is wonderful. While I don’t think it is necessary for them to put on a live show under the circumstances, it shows that they care about their fan base. While a lot of people are conflicted about WrestleMania moving to the PC, if they can still safely continue the show, it doesn’t really make sense for the show not to go on. Wrestling isn’t really something that you can pick up where you left off. It is a living, breathing entity within itself and it is ever-changing. While I could respect either decision, I like the fact that they’re not giving up. By the way, Triple H was awesome on commentary.
