Backlash (2020) Predictions

WWE

WWE

It’s that time again for another WWE PPV and this particular show will contain “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” or so they say. That is a lot of hype to live up to especially when neither are textbook “wrestlers”. Anyways, this should be an interesting show, even though the card leaves a lot to be desired. At the moment, there are 8 matches on the card, so it should be a fairly quick show. I hope so anyway.  Here are my predictions for the show.

*Predicted winners are bolded

*Match card is likely not in exact order

-       Women’s Triple Threat Tag Team Match: WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship

Bayley and Sasha Banks (C) vs. Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross vs. The IIconics

WWE

WWE

It feels like it has been a while since the Women’s Tag titles have been defended on a PPV other than WrestleMania. Bayley and Sasha won the belts just a couple weeks ago, so I don’t think they’ll drop them just yet. I feel like those belts will be what tears them apart in the near future, but I don’t think that will be right now. If they do lose them, I think The IIconics will be the new champs.

-       Men’s Singles Match: United States Championship

Apollo Crews (C) vs. Andrade (with Zelina Vega)

WWE

WWE

While I find it difficult to believe that Apollo Crews will lose his belt this quickly, I think that is just the swerve that they will pull tonight. I think a lot of people are expecting successful title defenses in all matches tonight, so if they’re going to go off the beaten path in at least one match, I think it will be this one. Andrade had a nice reign as US champ and I think they could go that route again. Crews is an overwhelming -550 favorite, but I think Andrade wins back the belt tonight.

-       Men’s Tag Team Match: RAW Tag Team Championship

The Street Profits (C) vs. The Viking Raiders

WWE

WWE

This match was just added earlier today and I’m really surprised it took them this long to confirm it. Their feud over the last few weeks has been very entertaining. They haven’t had matches, but they have had some fun contests where they went head-to-head outside of the ring. The Street Profits have had a great reign, but I think it comes to an end tonight. The Profits have had the longest RAW Tag Team title reign by any team in nearly 4 years and if you don’t count the time before it was declared has the RAW official tag belts, they have had the longest reign. Nothing would shock me in this match, but I think The Raiders pick up the win and the belts.

-       Men’s Singles Match

Jeff Hardy vs. Sheamus

WWE

WWE

The odds I have seen for this match have been basically even on all accounts. It’s tough to say who will win here, but I’m leaning towards Hardy. Sheamus has been too aggressively heelish for Hardy not to win in my opinion. This hasn’t been one of my favorite feuds by the way they have approached it, but Hardy has made the most of it. His personal life has had a lot of downs, but no matter what, the fans will continue to have his back because he is one of the most entertaining in-ring performers in the history of the WWE and I think that is a testament to the WWE Universe’s forgiving nature, despite having a bad reputation for the opposite sometimes. I think Hardy wins tonight and I could see him having a feud with AJ Styles down the line.

-       Women’s Singles Match: RAW Women’s Championship

Asuka (C) vs. Nia Jax

WWE

WWE

I usually don’t get personal with my predictions, but I really hope that Nia Jax doesn’t win the title tonight. Asuka is such a dominant in-ring performer that only a couple performers should have the honor of taking the belt away from her. Asuka is a rather large favorite to win and I think she will retain tonight, but if she doesn’t, I think that is the wrong move.

-       Men’s 1-on-2 Handicap Match: Universal Championship

Braun Strowman (C) vs. The Miz and John Morrison

WWE

WWE

Handicap matches for singles titles are stupid, I repeat, HANDICAP MATCHES FOR SINGLES TITLES ARE STUPID! Why is this even a thing. I get the fact that Strowman is such a dominant force that it should take more than one man to take him down, but this is just stupid and lazy booking. I have absolutely no interest in this match. They’re clearly just buying time for another match with The Fiend and having a tag team compete for a singles belt isn’t the answer to the problem. The last time a singles title was on the line in a handicap match, Strowman lost the Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn. Remember at WrestleMania 34 when Strowman didn’t have a tag partner, and wasn’t allowed to compete in the match without a partner? This should reflect the same sentiment. Tag Teams shouldn’t be allowed to compete for singles titles, end of discussion. I think Strowman retains and he has the highest odds of anyone tonight to retain at -1250.

-       Men’s Singles Match: WWE Championship

Drew McIntyre (C) vs. Bobby Lashley

WWE

WWE

I think McIntyre retains here, but I wouldn’t be totally shocked if Lashley wins. The way they have built him up has been sufficient, but if they go that route, Lashley will likely have a feud with Brock Lesnar. I don’t think this is the right move at the moment personally because they can just have a Lesnar/Lashley matchup without the belt on the line. McIntyre could be in line for a legendary title reign and I think it is well deserved. Lashley’s build has been good, but I don’t think it has been that good.

-       Men’s Singles Match

Edge vs. Randy Orton

WWE

WWE

This match has been tagged as “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”. Will it live up to that? I seriously doubt it, but I guess we’ll find out. Edge and Orton have had one of the best feuds in a long time and it is a shame that none of it will be played out in front of a crowd. I think this will be a cinematic match and they have been doing a lot of those lately. Most of them have lived up to expectation, but some have fallen quite short. This will probably be the longest match of the night, but I don’t think anyone would mind that. With all of that being said, I think Edge wins again. Neither competitor is hurt by taking a loss, but I think Edge has more to gain with a win. This should be a very interesting contest and I’m ready to watch.
