Song of the Day: One Toke Over the Line
Happy Friday folks! Today’s featured artist for Song of the Day is Brewer & Shipley. They were a folk group from the 60’s and 70’s and only had one hit called, “One Toke Over the Line”. The song was released in March of 1971 and it got up to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Brewer & Shipley typically played in college towns around Missouri and hit it big in LA. I just had to go with this one due to the controversy it created…if you read the link of the song…Spiro Agnew (VP for Nixon) said the song was clearly about marijuana and how it is creating “blatant drug culture propaganda”. Needless to say, he was not a fan…Lawrence Welk was though! He called this number a “Modern Day Spiritual” and had it featured on his show! Wow! I think Lawrence wanted to be one toke over the line and did not give a crap about what everyone else thought…so he thought…hey…I’ll just call it a spiritual because Jesus is in it…yea and Mary…good sneak there Lawrence. Brewer & Shipley say it was about over-doing anything…if you over-do it…you will push yourself over the edge…no matter what it is. You be the judge and have a happy July weekend!
