AEW Power Rankings: Week of August 6th 2020
This was a great week for AEW. They beat NXT in the ratings again, by a good margin, and even competed with RAW in particular demographics. I felt like it was more promotion of feuds rather than action, but the matches were great also. Weeks like this one make me wish that this were a Top 10 instead of a Top 5, but I had a feeling it would feel like that a lot when I started this. I did not include anything with Matt Hardy and Sammy Guevara, because I gave a little advantage to those who competed, but I liked what they did on Wednesday. Here are my rankings for the week and hopefully you guys agree.
5: Matt Cardona and Cody
Cardona made his AEW in-ring debut this week in a tag match and he and Cody defeated John Silver and Alex Reynolds of The Dark Order. The match wasn’t awesome, but it was perfect for the spot it was in and for the current situation. This was all about getting Cardona in the spotlight. Also, it looks like we may see Cody vs. Scorpio Sky for the TNT Championship pretty soon. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Scorpio become the second ever champion.
4: Best Friends
Best Friends defeated Santana and Ortiz in a great tag match. To be fair though, there aren’t many 2-on-2 tag matches in AEW that are duds. I think Best Friends deserve another shot at the tag titles, because they have been strong ever since the quarantine.
3: The Dark Order
There was a 12-man Tag match to kick off the show and Dark Order won the bout against The Elite and FTR. I personally thought the match was a little too busy, but it turned out fine.
2: Orange Cassidy/Chris Jericho
This was by far the most entertaining segment of the night and that is saying something. Eric Bischoff made a surprising appearance as the debate moderator and that was cool to see. Orange Cassidy was declared the winner of the debate and it was the strongest he has ever looked. This feud is nothing but great for his career and Chris Jericho can put him on another level. Kudos to Chris Jericho for his great character work and knowing his role and knowing how to react in the moment. Although we’re going to see this match next week, I think the score will be settled at All Out, next month.
1: Jon Moxley
Moxley vs. Allin for the AEW title was wonderful last night. Allin has quickly turned into an audience favorite and for good reason. He has absolutely no fear. Although some think that Moxley can be boring, I can’t disagree more. He is the perfect champion at the moment and I think they need to capitalize on him as much as they can. He has only been around sparingly over the last few months, but when he competes, he puts on great contests. MJF’s interference was perfect for establishing the feud more and i’m excited to see what happens at All Out.
