The Genesis Invitational DFS Preview
Another week and another tourney in Cali. The PGA Tour tees it up at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, California. To recap the Pebble Beach Pro-Am…we had Cantlay, Hahn and Furyk. Cantlay and Furyk performed pretty well, but Hahn missed the cut. This course will play different than Pebble Beach, as the length is at 7,200+ yards and there are slippery slopes that make putting difficult. The field consists of some of the bigger names in golf…DJ, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Rory and DeChambeau are the headliners. Around 120 invites are listed and that means around 60 will make the final cut after Round 2.
In making a solid strategy for The Genesis Invitational, I am looking at Driving Distance, Strokes Gained in Total, Putting and Scrambling. Riviera is a challenging course in that the greens are seldom hit…so I will be looking at Greens in Regulation and Accuracy as well. A golfer that can maintain a level-head will prevail. The pricing and field talent allows you to pick great golfers in the sub-$10k range. I will be implementing that strategy for sure, as I do not want to dip below $6k. Furyk is priced really low…but I looked into his history here and its not great. I tend to go with my “tried and true few'“ and if you have read my articles in the past…you’ll see what I am talking about.
Tier 1: Xander Schauffele $9,900
DraftKings has gifted us with “P2” Schauffele at under $10k folks. I really wanted to go DJ or DeChambeau because of their driving abilities, but fading a solid golfer like Xander is hard to pass up. He ranks 33rd in Driving Distance…5th in Putting and 2nd in Strokes Gained all around. I kind of think people will fade him, but who knows…this price is pretty great and I think your weekly golf dfs players should catch this one.
Tier 2: Joaquin Niemann ($8,800)
Not sure if you can call this a 2nd tier golfer…but I had to write about the Chilean prodigy. Niemann is top-15 in Driving Distance…top-15 in Greens in Regulation and top-10 in Strokes Gained in total. He ranks top-100 in virtually everything and is a great putter. This is my choice to win the tournament and he’s at 40/1 according to Bovada.
Tier 3: Russell Henley ($7,800)
Here is my reliable choice week in and week out…Henley is one of the best Scramblers in the game and is top-15 in Strokes Gained in total. He is not one of the best drivers in terms of distance, but plays in the green at a 75% clip. The ability to bail out bad shots will be key in this one and Henley is probably the best in the field at this. Bovada has him at 100/1 and this is a steal…Look for Henley to get a top-20 at Riviera.
