AT&T Byron Nelson DFS Preview
Well, the PGA Tour leaves North Carolina to head to McKinney, Texas for the AT&T Byron Nelson. The tournament is named for the legendary golfer who ranks 6th all time in PGA Tour wins. Being that this course has never been played on the PGA Tour…it is kind of difficult to decipher the best strategy for this one. I will be looking at Scoring, Putting and Driving. I know…this is pretty vague, but I am going to do this breakdown a little different this time. My choice last week did not make the cut as Tony Finau looked off in CLT. Dustin Johnson ultimately pulled out of the tournament here in Texas, but Rahm, Spieth, Matsuyama and Koepka headline the field. Also, glad to see Rory win at Quail Hollow, maybe he’s back.
I have to say, I will be posting the best driver, putter and “homer” (Player who played golf in Texas) for my analysis. It is a little unorthodox I know…but it worked in making a killer lineup. TPC Craig Ranch is a big course, playing at nearly 7,500 yards. The course also has large greens, which helps the long-driver’s with little accuracy and the holes are pretty straight-on. Scoring will be a premium for sure, but I want an elite putter as well. McKinney, Texas weather forecast looks amazing, with highs in the 70s and only a chance of rain on Sunday. I’m sure you’ll have to monitor those pop-up showers though.
Bryson DeChambeau: ($11,200)
A former SMU standout…DeChambeau has familiarity with the Texas courses. He just so happens to be the best scorer on the circuit…1st in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green and Off-the-Tee. DeChambeau is also the best driver in the game. The putter is pretty solid too…ranking top-40 in that. At 8.5/1 according to Bovada, pull the trigger on the favorite.
Kris Ventura: (S6,400)
Here is the best putter in the field…Kris Ventura. I will say that he barely etched out Brooks Koepka at .001, but the former Oklahoma St. product is actually not just a solid putter, he can drive too ranking at 34th on the PGA tour. Ventura was born in Mexico…moved to Norway at 12 years old and played with Hovland in college. I had to hold to my standards of picking the best putter in the field, so here you have it. 500/1 odds by the way to win.
Beau Hossler: ($6,500)
Here is the “homer” pick. Hossler played his college golf at Texas. That’s about…nah Hossler is 39th in Driving Distance, but aside from that, his statistics are not great. Hossler has made the last 2 cuts and I think a little momentum is heading his way. Early on in his career, he finished 2nd in Houston in a sudden death playoff, so maybe he can get the magic rekindled in McKinney. Odds are 350/1 to win.
