Travelers Championship DFS Preview
The PGA Tour travels north to TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut for the Travelers Championship this weekend. I have to say, the US Open was phenomenal and I still cannot believe that I picked Jon Rahm to win…I picked Higgo at Palmetto and hopefully we can keep it rolling here at The Sports Chief. Max Homa was disappointing for us, but other than that, we did okay. Torrey Pines is such a brutal course and to go to TPC River Highlands, it is quite different. Our strategy for this one will be to look at Scrambling…Approach…and Greens-in-Regulation. The field will consist of 156 golfers and roughly 65 will make the cut on Saturday. The Travelers also brings some of the big names out so keep an eye on that.
TPC River Highlands is a smaller course, being sub 7,000 yards. The ability to scramble and iron play will be crucial here. I have read in a lot of places of how Bubba Watson is dominant here, so that erases the stated theory, but I still think in order to make an efficient PGA lineup, you have to go with iron players. It is a Pete Dye designed course and is geographically similar to Muirfield at The Memorial, so I will be comparing those stats with Year-to-Date totals. I think you will see a lot of southeastern players shine here this weekend, just because of the grass type with it being Kentucky blue and fescue.
Tier 1: Scottie Scheffler ($9,600)
Here is my pick to win the Travelers and hopefully keep my streak going. Scheffler is a leaderboard hog…he finished 3rd at The Memorial and 7th at the US Open. The former Texas product has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but is ranked as a top-20 golfer in the world. This is a course where he can put it all together and come away with a victory. With virtually no flaws in his game, take Scheffler at 22/1 (CBS Sports).
Tier 2: Harris English ($8,200)
I have waited for this one for awhile…English had been battling a back problem for a few months, but that seems to have been fixed as the Georgia Bulldog alumnus finished 3rd at the US Open and 14th at Palmetto. English has also made 5 straight cuts. He is 11th overall in scrambling and is a great fade option to Russell Henley, who I have been seeing a lot of experts picking. At 35/1…English is a great mid-tier option.
Tier 3: Rickie Fowler ($7,300)
This is so weird to say, but Rickie Fowler is my lowest priced golfer in my lineup this week. The former prodigy has fell out of the spotlight lately, but don’t sleep on him, as he finished 11th at The Memorial and 8th at the PGA Championship. He put on a scrambling clinic at Muirfield placing 4th in the field. In my opinion, you will see a lot of players overlook him in this range, but in all reality, you cannot forget what type of player Fowler could be…sitting at 50/1…he has the same odds as players priced as high as $8,500.
