What Would a Team of MLB First-Round Draft Picks in the Last 10 Years Look Like?

The title pretty much is self-explanatory. I have compiled a team of 1st Round Draft picks within the last 10 years based on WAR. Unlike a lot of professional sports, getting drafted in the first round doesn’t always mean you will have an uber successful career. in fact, there are 1st-round MLB Draft picks that don’t ever make it to the big leagues. While there are a lot of successful 1st-round picks, a lot more successful players are drafted outside of the 1st Round. The MLB host very large drafts simply because they have so many teams in their respective farm systems and they have to fill rosters. This year, the draft was cut in half. In the past, MLB Drafts used to last 40 rounds, now we only have 20 largely due to the MLB cutting out some minor league teams.

Tonight, we have the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft and no, I’m not doing a mock draft, but I knew I wanted to work on something for the draft. I am going to settle for this. I looked over the 1st-Round selections in the last 10 years and compiled a starting lineup and a few reserves. Looking over this, I found a few things to be odd. One, 2nd Basemen rarely get drafted in the 1st Round. I wonder why that is? Two, in most cases, it takes 5 years for prospects to reach the majors. Most baseball fans already knew that, but it is crazy considering the fact that NBA and NFL jump right in. I could go on about things I noticed, but those were two of the biggest ones. Also, if you haven’t noticed, the draft has been pushed back a couple weeks. It appears that they will be draft at All-Star break from here on out and I love this new change. Not only does it give fans more of a reason to watch the draft, it is also a little less stressful on those making the selections and those being selected. The draft was always in the midst of the NCAA tournament and oddly enough, players would often get told that a team drafted them during the middle of a game. Despite disliking a lot of the new implementations that the MLB has done over the last few years, I like this new change. I’m not going to waste any more time, here is the All-MLB First Round Team over the last 10 years.
