The Northern Trust DFS Preview
The FedEx Playoffs have begun! After a week in Greensboro, NC…the PGA Tour heads to Jersey City for The Northern Trust at Liberty National. The top-125 golfers will be in the field and the top-70 in the standings will advance to the next round. Wyndham was a rocky one for us, having Oosthuizen pull out right before the start and Rickie Fowler bombing…we did have a few bright spot picks though with Streelman nearly getting in one the 6 man playoff and Chesson Hadley shooting a final round 62 to get in The Northern Trust. We will be implementing more of a risk/reward strategy for this one. All of the top golfers will be in this one, so it is important to have balance in your DFS strategy.
Liberty National plays at 7,400+ yards and is on the site of an old WW1 landfill. The PGA Tour last played here in 2019 and Patrick Reed was the winner. I will be looking at past results, but most importantly I will be analyzing driving ability alongside ball striking. Scoring will be a little more difficult to come by compared to what we saw in Greensboro. From what I can tell, the course plays fast so accuracy is a premium. Avoiding the water and bunkers will help, but I think driving is where its at. You will also have many of the golfers around the top-70 trying varying strategies, but I am not as focused on that…I think the ones ranked higher are there for a reason and I do not want to get caught in the trap of picking someone who “needs” to win (cough cough Fowler).
Tier 1: Bryson DeChambeau ($9,600)
When I said driving, you had to be thinking about Bryson right?!? He gains the most strokes off the tee than anyone in the field and is priced so low, that I could not pass him up. I know that he choked at the FedEx St Jude, but I think this course plays well to his ability. If he can focus on his accuracy just a tad, he could win and I think he will…CBS Sports has him at 25/1.
Tier 2: Corey Conners ($8,300)
This guy falls into one of my “reliable” choices week in and week out. Conners ranks 6th in ball striking and 9th in strokes gained off the tee. There are so many aspects of Conners game that is rock solid. At a course where you need to keep your composure, I see Conners competing all weekend long. I’ll take Conners at 55/1 all day long.
Tier 3: Sam Ryder ($6,000)
We went down to the lowest priced options with this one. I was clicking through some of the lower options and really wanted to go with Chesson Hadley again, being that 62 was quite impressive…but I came across this Florida native golfer who hasn’t missed a cut since the first of July and has been hovering in the top-40 every week. Statistically speaking, he doesn’t have eye-popping numbers, but he is an accurate enough golfer for me to consider. Ryder is my long shot choice at 300/1.
