BMW Championship DFS Preview
The PGA Tour season is coming to a close, but not without some action in Owings Mills, Maryland for the BMW Championship. After this “cut-less” event, only one tournament remains to crown this years FedEx Champion. Tony Finau came away with a monumental victory that propelled him into 1st place in the FedEx Cup standings. With 70 golfers in the field, it will be important to select 6 golfers who can score at will. Being that all 4 rounds of golf are in play for everyone, eagles and birdies will be held to a high premium. DraftKings did a pretty good job with pricing, but they left some high-quality golfers in the lower tier. I will be looking at great drivers and maybe look at some scrambling as well in picking my strategy.
Caves Valley Golf Club is prepared to host their 1st PGA Event and Cal Ripken Jr is one of their most famous members. The course is around 7,500+ yards in distance and the roughs aren’t even that rough. If you can hit the greens at a decent rate and if you have some distance to your drives, I think you will contend this weekend. Without any past history at the place, it will be difficult to compare it to anything, so as I stated earlier…the best scorers will probably be at the top of the leaderboard this weekend. The weather will be in the low 90’s and chances of rain are slim to none.
Tier 1: Rory McIlroy ($9,400)
This is my choice to win this weekend. He is known to be one of the best drivers in the game and at this price, Rory should return immense value. I know that he is ranked 28th in the standings, but this course seems to play to his strengths…if he misses (which he tends to do) it will not hurt him as badly. You can get Rory at 28/1 according to CBS Sports.
Tier 2: Paul Casey ($8,200)
My strategy this week seems to feature veterans of the sport…the Englishman is a great driver and one of the best scramblers in the field. This season, Casey has contended every week…he just needs a victory. I made a point not to pick any golfer that ranked outside the top-50 in driving distance and Casey fills that void. He’s one of the best hitting the greens as well, putting is really his only weakness, but I don’t think you need to putt well to win here. Give me Casey at 35/1.
Tier 3: Sergio Garcia ($7,600)
The Spaniard is in my tier 3…with the field being so stout…Garcia is priced relatively low. Sergio is known to be a bomber and ranks 3rd in strokes gained off the tee. I understand he failed to make the cut last week, but this place screams scoring. Garcia is still a top-20 driver and he has the ability to shock the world this weekend. My dark-horse choice is 80/1 to win.
