Charlotte FC Report: Week 7, 2022

Charlotte FC

Charlotte didn’t extend the winning streak like we all hoped they would, but it was to be expected. Philadelphia Union took down the visiting Charlotte FC 2-0. Charlotte controlled most of the possession time, but that’s what Philadelphia wanted with their outstanding defensive unit. Charlotte also got more shots out, but not many of them were of any quality. It’s definitely a bummer, but Philadelphia is one of the best teams in the MLS this year, so it wasn’t particularly a bad loss. Also, Charlotte didn’t play nearly as aggressively as they normal do. Hopefully we will see a more aggressive squad this Sunday.

Atlanta United is coming to town this weekend in Charlotte’s first Sunday afternoon fixture. These two teams have met already this season and Atlanta took that contest 2-1. Like the Charlotte’s last matchup, this is one of the top teams in the MLS. They have a lot of guys that can create some offensive firepower, but most notably, they’re led by the leg of Josef Martinez. Since entering the league in 2017, they have been a really good team. They also have a big fan base, but that shouldn’t come into play in this meeting. Charlotte’s Sunday crowd should be lively and hopefully that advantage will carry them to at least a win or draw.

MLS

In the first meeting between these two teams, Charlotte went with a more aggressive offensive attack and I think they should do the same this weekend. The game came down to an extra time goal for Atlanta, so they were battling for the entirety of the match. In acquisition news, Charlotte acquired Quinn McNeill this week, who is a former Clemson midfielder. McNeill will spend this season at Charlotte Independence. Charlotte also re-upped Jaylin Lindsey’s deal. He’ll be locked in through 2024 with a 1-year club option following that. The Charlotte native has been great at the full back position this season and it’s good to see them locking up the hometown player. Hopefully we see a different outcome than the first meeting with Atlanta and hopefully we can see some goals put up on the board on Sunday.
