AEW Just Got a Little Edgier
The Rated R Superstar is ALL ELITE! Wow! I never expected the man formally known as Edge to leave the WWE for AEW. Adam Copeland showed up to shock the wrestling world at last night AEW WrestleDream PPV. Copeland came to the rescue of Sting and Darby Allin to fend off Nick Wayne, Luchasaurus, and his best friend Christian Cage.
I think fans were somewhat anticipating this debut last night, but it was one of those things that you would have to see to believe. During the post-show Media Scrum, Copeland and Tony Khan announced that he will be a full-time performer. His first match is already announced for a special Tuesday night Dynamite next week against Luchasaurus.
Adam Copeland is a massive addition to the AEW roster and the company is a much better product with him in play. His WWE career accolades speaks for itself. His final run in the WWE was incredible and he proved that he was arguably better than he was than when he had to abruptly retire back in 2011. He made a triumphant return at the 2020 Royal Rumble to a huge pop and the run was awesome, but somewhat diminished by a lot of fans due to the pandemic. Despite the pandemic, he put on some all-time classics.
Now that Copeland is in AEW the question that has to be asked is, what is next? Who is next for the Rated R Superstar. The fan always has a wondering mind and the thoughts run through your mind of potential opportunities for the future. In his 15-minute media scrum appearance, he mentioned that he wants to be there to help and contribute to the growing product and the thing that attracted him to the promotion is freedom. There are tons of wrestlers that he hasn’t shared the ring with. He mentioned a few names that he is interested in working with and i’ll just say there are virtually endless possibilities. The first name he mentioned was Samoa Joe and I can’t wait for that match, if it happens. He also said that last night was the first time that he was in the same ring as Sting. He said that he met many of the wrestlers backstage for the first time ever last night, including MJF and Kenny Omega.
At the top of the list is Christian Cage, and it appears that we’re going to see that match pretty soon. If you would’ve told me back in 2016 that Edge and Christian would be wrestling each other in a different company, I wouldn’t have believed you. in 2023, it will be reality. I can’t believe it. In addition to Christian, you have to think that Copeland will likely mix it up with The Hardys in the not so distant future. The nostalgia wave will be in full force with that potential contest.
As for me, I just want to see him in the ring with the best that AEW has to offer. I think there are a ton of opportunities to elevate a ton of wrestlers. Not that he really needs it, but Copeland and MJF would be a classic. You could throw the BCC in there as well. With the exception of Bryan Danielson, he has never faced any of those guys and Wheeler Yuta was the only non-WWE guy in that bunch.
This signing is a win-win for both AEW and Copeland. AEW gets a big-time performer on the roster that will bring more eyes to the product as well as elevate other performers. Copeland gets a chance to be a full-time performer again, which is clearly something that he wanted and WWE wouldn't allow it. Also, he is clearly not a locker room problem. In fact, many say quite the opposite. AEW has had some issues with that in the past, but Copeland is a locker room asset. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about him.
Like a lot of wrestling fans, I am excited to see the Rated R Superstar wrestling in a full-time capacity and I am excited to see what the future holds for him in AEW. It should be a fun ride. You can tell he is thrilled to be there.
