ESPN Will Debut NHL's Version of NFL RedZone on October 24th
Frozen Frenzy will debut on ESPN on Tuesday, October 24th as all 32 NHL teams will be playing. This new show will mimic what the NFL does with RedZone every Sunday when they show live clips of games. It is being advertised that “every power play, every hit, every goal, every highlight” will be shown. All of the big goals will be shown and all of the best hockey action throughout that day will be on full display. A lot of fans are excited to see this new show and I am one of them. I can’t wait to spend all Tuesday night watching clips of every hockey game.
I hope that this is not going to be a one-time thing either. I think the NHL would benefit from something like this and I think it would be a great way to grow the sport. With that being said, I think the MLB would benefit tremendously with an idea like this. I dont know how you could do it with the NBA and make it work, but it would work like a dream in baseball. It should be a phenomenal thing for the NHL.
Looking at the schedule, it looks like there are a lot of good games as well. The one that stands out to me is the Hurricanes vs. Lightning. The Lightning will be down for the first couple of months at least with their star goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. He will be recovering from back surgery. On the bright side for the Canes, they will have a healthy Andrei Svechnikov on their front line.
The premiere matchup will definitely be the Boston Bruins vs. Chicago Blackhawks. Superstar rookie Connor Bedard will get his first look at the Boston Bruins in front of his home crowd. The Bruins were the top team last season, well, in NHL history for that matter. It will not be the first Blackhawks/Bruins matchup of the season though. They face each other two weeks before this. I know of at least two Sport Chief guys that will be watching out for this game.
Two more games that I have my eye on are the Stars vs. Penguins and the Sabres vs. Senators. The Stars and Penguins matchup will be a star-powered showdown between two very good teams. The Penguins got a lot better this offseason with the addition of Erik Karlsson. The Sabres/Senators matchup is a game with a lot of good potential on the ice. Both teams are loaded with younger players that could be next in line as the league’s best. Also, Patrick Kane is rumored to be a Sabre by the end of the season. Even if Kane does sign with Buffalo, he won’t be available for this game, but it should be interesting to see where he goes. I think America’s best hockey player would be a great fit Buffalo.
Going back to the Frozen Frenzy thing. I think it is a fantastic concept and this is being advertised as a one-time thing at the moment, but hopefully it isn’t. I think this will bring a lot of eyes to the product and hockey fans will love to see the continuous action going on.
