Song of the Day: Dig a Little Deeper in God's Love

Happy Sunday and Happy Easter. I always enjoy picking the Song of the Day for Easter Sunday and I have a treat for you today. The song was written in 1947 by Kenneth Morris, from Jamaica, New York. Mahalia Jackson was one of, if not, the earliest recording of the song, but I am not featuring her version. My featured group is The Fairfield Four. They are an A Cappella Gospel group that originated in Nashville, Tennessee. Their history is rich and the start of the group can be traced back to 1921. From 1960-80, they disbanded, but after 1980, they haven’t stopped. They are still active to this day. In this particular featured video, they performed on the Gaither Homecoming series in 1993. The Homecoming series was really popular in the 90s and still is to this day. They have amazing harmonies and they have such a full sound without any instruments. The bass singer of the Fairfield Four Isaac “Dickie” Freeman is phenomenal. I love the reaction of pure joy and excitement from the singers in the crowd, especially bass singer, George Younce’s reaction. He loves it. At the bottom, I will include a version that he and his group, The Cathedrals sang.

Also, if you feel like you may recognize The Fairfield Four from something else, they had a cameo in the 2000 movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? The film’s album won a Grammy for Best Album. Not best movie soundtrack, best ALBUM, period. The group’s song “Lonesome Valley” was featured on the album. A song I may have to feature in the future. I hope you all have a great day and enjoy this Easter Sunday.
