WWE Power Rankings: Week of December 29th, 2019
Well, the time is finally here for the final WWE Power Rankings of the year and I can’t believe it has been a full year since I’ve been doing this. I have enjoyed not only breaking down each week in wrestling, but actually seeing the changes take place throughout the year. I’ll get into more detail next week when I reveal the Year-End WWE Power Rankings, but for now, here are this week’s Rankings.
- 10: The O.C. (8)
The O.C. happened to be featured later in the show on Monday night against the team of Randy Orton and The Viking Raiders. They won the match and I like where this feud is headed. It looks like they will continue what they started with the tag team and it appears that Styles and Orton may be rekindling a feud. Their match at WrestleMania 35 was above average-to-mediocre, but hopefully they can redo it and make it what they want. At the moment, I don’t see Orton or Styles winning the Rumble, but I guess anything can happen.
- 9: Becky Lynch/Asuka (9, 5)
I felt inclined to include Lynch again this week, but Asuka added something to the segment and deserved to be included also. Becky vs. Asuka again at Royal Rumble is music to my ears. I really want to see this matchup again. Not because their matchup last year wasn’t bad, but the way they handled it could’ve been better. I don’t see Asuka winning the title here and I don’t think she will be the Rumble winner, so hopefully those possible distractions will hinder it from having a questionable ending this year.
- 8: Seth Rollins and AOP (2, NR)
Rollins and AOP are the hottest thing on RAW at the moment. They took a slight backseat this week, but were still heavily involved in the show. Rollins had a match with Rey Mysterio for the US title, but was DQ’d. They continued to attack Mysterio after the match was called and even temporary RAW commentator Samoa Joe stepped in. Joe then was put through the announce table. This could set up Joe’s return to action and a possible face turn, something we haven’t seen in the WWE.
- 7: Isaiah “Swerve” Scott (NR)
Swerve makes is first appearance on the Power Rankings this week and he couldn’t have timed it any better. Swerve made his debut back in July, but was a pretty big deal in the independent scene prior to signing with WWE. He picked up a win this week against Jack Gallagher and it was a fun Cruiserweight bout. I can totally see Swerve as the North American Champion in 2020 or possibly the Cruiserweight Champion. He has a ton of potential and he had a great opportunity to show it this week.
- 6: Sasha Banks and Bayley (NR)
After seemingly getting bested by Lacey Evans last week, the team of Sasha and Bayley had their chance to showcase themselves in a match against Evans and Dana Brooke. They won the match and regained the momentum that they seemingly lost last week. This action looks like it is setting up for a Bayley/Evans matchup at Royal Rumble, but I didn’t really like the way Dana Brooke was used. She could’ve been utilized in a better way this week, but hopefully things start to be trending upward for her.
- 5: Kevin Owens (NR)
Ever since moving to RAW, KO has possibly been the most important superstar on the roster. He has opened many shows and he did again this week as well. This time he faced another underutilized talent in Mojo Rawley. I thought they did great to give Rawley a chance to shine here, so hopefully this is a sign of hope for the former André The Giant Battle Royal winner. Owens seems like he is one of the favorites to win the Rumble and I think that would be interesting to see.
- 4: Roman Reigns (NR)
Did I just say Rumble favorites? I did, and Roman Reigns has to be the favorite going into the Rumble, but for now, he is still tied up with King Corbin. He is looking to seek retribution for that so-called ending at TLC and he will also look to end the feud on his terms. He was used perfectly this week in the opener, attacking King Corbin on his way to the ring. The match was diverted to the main event, where Reigns was out of the picture, but it was a nice touch to remind the WWE Universe that Reigns is still here after not being present in last week’s show.
- 3: Andrade (NR)
Andrade clearly had a big week, but only a handful of people actually saw it unfold. WWE made their annual Holiday tour to end the year this week and a big title change happened at Madison Square Garden on Thursday. Andrade squared off with Rey Mysterio for the United States Championship and he secured the winning earning his first US title. I would say it was his first title in WWE, but he won the NXT Championship back in 2017 and carried it until WrestleMania weekend. It is encouraging news for Andrade, so it appears that Andrade may be on the path of success in 2020.
- 2: Roderick Strong (NR)
Strong had the only successful title defense this week on Wednesday and the match was definitely one of the best of the week in the WWE. He defended his title against Austin Theory, who has made a name for himself in Evolve. It looks like Undisputed Era will be the top group heading into 2020 as they should be.
- 1: Daniel Bryan (10)
Bryan won the main event of the only live broadcast of the week and that warrants the top spot in this week’s rankings. He faced off against King Corbin and The Miz and will now face The Fiend at Royal Rumble in a few weeks. It should be another excellent match between these two, but I just don’t think Wyatt will lose. I have no doubts that they will do everything in their power to sell a possible Bryan win though.
