AEW Power Rankings: Week of January 23rd, 2020
AEW picked up another win this Wednesday night and the show happened to be shot on the deck of Chris Jericho’s annual cruise. The setting was unique and I thought it was pretty cool. This is something that you wouldn’t see in the WWE and the crowd on the cruise ship was on fire, figuratively of course. The Rankings contain the winners from each of the matches, because there were 5 matches on the card. Here are my rankings for this week and things may get interesting next week, since the Royal Rumble is this Sunday.
- 5: Britt Baker
Britt Baker picked up a much-needed win against a woman making her singles debut in AEW, Priscilla Kelly. Kelly is somewhat of a controversial Indie wrestler, but nevertheless, she did a great job last night. The match was solid, but the commercial break hurt the quality a little bit. After the match, although i’m reading a lot of positive remarks about it, I thought Baker cut a bad promo. Very bad, in fact, but I don’t blame her that much. It was so bad, they seemingly cut to commercial early, but that could’ve been planned to be perfectly honest. They attempted to turn her heel, but it felt very forced and unnatural. Baker is far from a heel. She is seemingly a down-to-earth, sweet, hardworking girl and having her act the way she did was a horrible move from the creative team. I can honestly say that this was the biggest blunder for AEW’s creative and that is saying a lot in the 4 months that they have been on TV.
- 4: MJF
The Salt of the Earth picked up a nice win over Joey Janela and this whole segment was just solid. I hate to see that Janela is taking a lot of losses, but his time will surely come. Getting MJF as much momentum as possible is a big goal for AEW at the moment. The Young Bucks made an appearance here, which was a little unexpected especially in this particular feud. Also, it looks like they’re going to set up a feud between Joey Janela and Kip Sabian. Hopefully Janela gains a little momentum there.
- 3: Chris Jericho, Ortiz and Santana
While these guys got the win against the Jurassic Express, the Jurassic Express gained a ton of momentum in the loss. The match was a solid showing for all involved and it keeps Ortiz and Santana fresh, while they’re currently not in a feud. Jericho also made another appearance in the main event to join the commentary table. I’m fired up for Moxley vs. Jericho next month.
- 2: Jon Moxley
Speaking of Moxley, he defeated Pac in the main event of Dynamite this week the match was a good one and Moxley continues his dominant ways. It appears that Moxley is the early favorite for Wrestler of the Year in all of wrestling and it will be well deserved if it happens. I’d even go as far to say that he could walk into Revolution as the favorite in the match. Pac is always going to be towards the top of the contender’s rankings, but for now, he will be pushed away for a moment to make way for the Moxley and Jericho feud.
- 1: Hangman Page and Kenny Omega
As far as my ranking for the week go, this had to be done. Your new AEW Tag Team Champions are Hangman Page and Kenny Omega! I felt like it was going to be a matter of time before SCU dropped the titles, but I didn’t really expect Page and Omega to be the ones to take them. This is clearly going to be a short-term thing, because the way their story is going, Page and Omega aren’t really seeing eye-to-eye. This was also the first title change in AEW history, so there’s that.
