WWE Power Rankings: Week of April 7th 2020
WrestleMania has come and gone on the couple of weeks prior and following WrestleMania can be somewhat chaotic, but it doesn’t seem to be the case this year. Sure, there were some major title changes, but it doesn’t have that WrestleMania feeling. Not to say the show wasn’t good, but like everything in the world, it just feels weird to say this is the week following WrestleMania. A quarter of the year is already over and a lot of things have changes over the course of 13 weeks. Here’s how Week 14 turned out in my opinion
- 10: Bayley
Bayley walked out of WrestleMania with belt still in hand. Bayley has had a long reign as champ and she added onto that reign this week. I thought there was a good chance that she would lose the belt, but obviously that isn’t the case. Bayley has been a decent champion, but I think she’ll lose the title within a couple months.
- 9: John Morrison
Morrison defended the SmackDown Tag Team Championships in a triple threat ladder match and walked out with a successful title defense. The concept had to be changed for obvious reasons and it actually worked. It isn’t surprising that these guys put on a great match, especially when there are ladders involved.
- 8: Becky Lynch
Sadly, successful title defenses aren’t as attractive at WrestleMania. Becky Lynch retained her title against Shayna Baszler and I think that is the theme of the back portion of this week’s power rankings. Becky holding on to the title has mixed reviews among fans, but I just don’t think Baszler is quite ready for the belt. Will she be in a couple months? I’d say so, but Baszler simply wasn’t featured in the ring enough on RAW, and I think that I partially the reason Becky retained.
- 7: Kevin Owens
KO came away with a big win in a good match on Saturday night. He beat Seth Rollins in a No-DQ match and it looks like he may be next in line for a title shot. He can clearly work as a face or a heel, so it doesn’t matter which one he works as. Jumping off of the WrestleMania sign was a big moment of the show and I’m interested to see where he goes from here.
- 6: Braun Strowman
It is almost a shame to put Strowman out of the Top 5, but it had to be done. Strowman earned his first major title on Saturday. He defeated Goldberg in a hard-hitting match, but the match was one of the worst on the card. If the match were better he definitely would be Top 5, but he should have a lot of chances to prove himself in the near future.
- 5: Edge
Edge gets a Top 5 spot for the week and he put on a great match with Randy Orton on Sunday night. He picked up the win in somewhat of a marathon match. A lot of people complaining about the match length, but I personally get why it dragged on. Probably more than anyone that competed this week, I’m interested to see what is next for the Rated-R Superstar.
- 4: Bray Wyatt
This particular WrestleMania allowed for some matches to go out on a limb and Wyatt and Cena’s match passed the test. I wouldn’t call it a match, it was more like a cinematic display of sports entertainment. It was unique to say the least and I really enjoyed it. There are lot of different ways they can go with Wyatt. He doesn’t need the belt to be successful, but they certainly can put him back in that discussion very quickly.
- 3: The Undertaker
This was the most successful piece of a cinematic display of sports entertainment of the weekend and that is saying a lot. What they did with The Undertaker and AJ Styles was amazing, but I don’t want this sort of thing to be overdone. In special situations like this, they can utilize legendary talent in a great way that won’t make expose weaknesses. Part of me thinks that it would probably be best if Undertaker moves on, but then again, I would really miss not seeing him in action. Undertaker will decide when Undertaker is done and that is fine by me.
- 2: Charlotte Flair
Surprisingly, since starting my Power Rankings in January of 2019, Charlotte Flair has never been ranked number one in a single week. That still isn’t the case and I hate that. I wanted to put her at the top, but I think one more person deserved over her. She and Rhea Ripley put on a heck of a performance Sunday night in the opener of night two. She is the new NXT Women’s Champion and I’m excited to see what is next for her.
- 1: Drew McIntyre
Drew McIntyre is your new WWE Champion and deservingly so. McIntyre held of Brock Lesnar in the main event of night two and I’m glad he is the new champ. It is a shame that he didn’t get the perfect moment he wanted, but I think he will thrive with the new title. Although if doesn’t count for this week’s rankings, he defended the title against Big Show on RAW and I thought it was a good match. McIntyre should have a decent run with the championship and I’m anxious to see how it all turns out.
