AEW Power Rankings: Week of July 15th 2020

This week’s episode happened to be the 2nd ever Fight for the Fallen and it was aired as an episode of Dynamite. It was a good show in my opinion, but going into the show, I was really only interested in the AEW title match. Despite this, it was a good show. Nyla Rose introduced her new manager, and it is none other than Vickie Guerrero, which was cool to see. There were some good tag matches and some good title defenses this week as well. Here are my rankings for the week.

5: Orange Cassidy/Chris Jericho

While some may not have liked this segment, I enjoyed it. The orange juice drop from the ceiling was a little corny for some, but The Inner Circle owned it. Some also think that Orange Cassidy would never go to that much trouble to prank someone, but I disagree. I feel like he would try really hard on something as meaningless as that, but something that would require effort he would only give a small percentage. Either way, the feud doesn’t appear to be over and I think it will be interesting to see a few more weeks of this. Also, the whole Demo God thing with Jericho is just a big work and fans are getting totally bent out of shape over it. It’s pretty hilarious.

4: Cody

Cody had a successful title defense against a lesser known opponent in Sonny Kiss this week. Kiss hasn’t been on TV a lot and this was obviously a way to get him on TV. The match was decent, nothing spectacular, but decent. I’m not sure what is next for the TNT title picture, but Cody is defending it next week on Dynamite.

3: FTR

The Lucha Bros and FTR had a great tag team match this week and FTR took the win. More importantly though was what happened after the match. The Elite (without Page) congratulated the winners and FTR disrespected them by pouring beer on their heads, Omega in particular. It is clear that they aren’t playing games with the rest of the tag division and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see FTR as the next tag champs when the time comes.

2: Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks

This was probably the best match of the night, but in all honesty, it was a meaningless match. The match itself wasn’t that meaningful, but the actions after the match could be very meaningful. Omega attacked Marko Stunt after the match and we could be seeing an Omega heel turn in the near future. Fans can say all they want about Omega not be utilized properly, but he has been without question, the most utilized performer in AEW and I can prove it with my weekly power rankings. Now has he been in match opportunities? Not really, but he has been utilized well despite what people are saying. All this time, we thought that Page was wanting to rip the team apart, but it could be Omega. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

1: Jon Moxley

AEW

AEW

Moxley was in action for the first time in a while and it was great to see him back on TV. He had a successful title defense against Brian Cage on Wednesday when Taz threw in the towel for Cage. This was the right move for creative and Cage walks out of this match not losing by pinfall or submission, which is good for him. The match wasn’t too exciting, but it had a good old-fashioned fight feel to it, which is something we have come to expect in AEW. Moxley has been a great champ and I could see that being the case for the rest of 2020. It was also cool seeing Darby Allin make an appearance at the show’s closing
