The Horror Show at Extreme Rules Results and Reaction (2020)
One word to sum up this show would have to be; odd. It was a very odd presentation and it is something that we haven’t seen in a really long time. Half of the show was without a clear winner, which seems weird to begin with, but that is forgetting the fact that a man lost his eye last night. This show was clearly just something to hold us off until a bigger platform presents itself and that’s fine. Overall, it wasn’t a good show, but it wasn’t a bad show all-in-all. Here are the results of each match and my reaction to it all.
- Men’s Singles Match
Kevin Owens over Murphy
In all reality, this was a meaningless match in the kickoff show, but it was a solid match that happened to be under 10 minutes. It is odd seeing KO in the kickoff show, but he isn’t really attached to anything at the moment, so I guess it is better than nothing. The pop-up moonsault that Owens delivered was pretty sweet, but it didn’t deliver the win. It was the stunner that did Murphy in. Owens wins, but I’m not exactly sure what is next for him.

- Men’s Tag Team Tables Match: SmackDown Tag Team Championship
Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura over The New Day (C)
The PPV started off with an exciting match that ended with new champs. Once this match was over, I had a really good feeling about the show moving forward. Tables matches rarely disappoint and this wasn’t an exception. Although they didn’t win, I feel like Kofi and Big E carried this match. I think in 10-15 years, we’ll look back and realize just how good The New Day was and is. They’re a special tag team and the fact that they lost last night obviously doesn’t hurt them. Cesaro and Nakamura should do well as champs, if they’re given proper opportunities. Solid opener.

- Women’s Singles Match: SmackDown Women’s Championship
Bayley (C) over Nikki Cross
I feel that Nikki Cross proved last night that she belongs in the women’s championship discussion from here on out. The ending of the match may indicate that the feud isn’t over, but I guess we’ll find out more later on. Nikki Cross was great and Bayley, despite having to cheat to win, was on top of her game. The ending was the only flaw and I consider it a small flaw, because it was believable. It was a realistic dirty win. The match itself was non-stop and I thought it was going to be the early favorite for match of the night, but it fell short. Hopefully Cross gets another shot at the belt.

- Men’s Singles Match: United States Championship
MVP over Apollo Crews (C); by forfeit
This wasn’t a match, so it will not get a grade, but it seems odd that this is the way they presented the match. They could’ve just cancelled the match and I don’t think that anyone would’ve cared at this point, but they made a point to mention that Crews was “injured” by Lashley a month ago. It was weird, but it fit the mold for the whole show. MVP walked out with the championship, but WWE.com still has Crews as champ. I feel like they basically said that Crews had Covid without actually saying.
GRADE: N/A
- Eye for an Eye Match
Seth Rollins over Rey Mysterio
A lot of reviews are saying the same thing, but it is the truth when I say, this would have been an excellent match if the stupid eye stipulation wasn’t attached, no pun intended. If this were an Extreme Rules match, it would’ve probably been match of the night. The eye gags were gut-wrenching and they served their purpose, but it was just stupid. There was no need for guys as talented as these two to be in a match like this. Where do we go from here? Who knows. The stipulation knocks it down 2 full points.

- Women’s Singles Match: RAW Women’s Championship
Sasha Banks vs. Asuka (C); No Contest
Did Sasha win? Was it a no contest? Nobody knows. The match minus the ending was without a doubt, the match of the night. 10/10 if it had a clean finish, but they had to screw it up. Sasha walked out with the title, they rang the bell and I assume that Sasha is the new champ, or is she? WWE.com still has Asuka as champion and I should point out the fact that I’ve never had to go on WWE.com to clarify if a title changed hands or not, and for this show, I had to do it twice. Again, very odd show. This was obviously an angle to get better ratings for RAW and SmackDown because they’re struggling at the moment and they need more eyes back on the product, so they left us with a heck of a cliffhanger. I’m still considering Asuka as champion, but I guess we’ll find out more tonight on RAW.

- Extreme Rules Match: WWE Championship
Drew McIntyre (C) over Dolph Ziggler *MATCH OF THE NIGHT*
This was a great match and it had a great finish, which was something that was hard to come by in the show. Ziggler proved, yet again, that he is one of the best in-ring performers in the WWE and Drew McIntyre proved that he is the best thing that WWE has to offer at the moment. The goal in the match was accomplished. The Extreme Rules stipulation for only Dolph Ziggler was odd at first to here, but you barely even noticed that it was the case. I was concerned about the flow of the match after that announcement, but it was no concern at all. This feud is very likely over and I don’t know what is next for the WWE title picture, but whatever is next, don’t expect McIntyre to drop the title anytime soon.

- Wyatt Swamp Fight
Bray Wyatt over Braun Strowman; I guess?
Was this a match? Not really. Was it particularly good? Not really. It was surprisingly boring. I had a feeling that WWE would run these cinematic matches into the ground and they have done just that in my opinion. I personally thought that they should save them only for special occasions, but it seems like there is one every PPV. I get that they’re trying to shake things up due to the fact that there aren’t any fans allowed, but just like the theme for the night, this match was odd and not really in a good way. I feel like you either loved this or totally didn’t. I didn’t really enjoy it. The best part of the match was Alexa Bliss dressed as Sister Abigail in my opinion. The Fiend popped up in the end and it looks like Wyatt and Strowman will have one more match with The Fiend likely regaining the Universal Championship. I understand why people would like it, it just really didn’t do anything for me. Maybe I’ll have to rewatch it.
