Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2. Released on the band’s third studio album War, in 1983. I knew U2 went back to the 80s but i definitely would have guessed mid to late 80s, not 1983. The song itself is about the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Northern Ireland where an incident between British soldiers and protesters led to the death of 14 civilians after shots were fired. This song along with New Year’s Day, which also featured on the album War, helped catapult the band to mainstream success. Despite this song being one of the band’s most popular songs, it has been performed live by the band more than 600 times, and it being ranked in the top 300 on Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs of all time list, the song only ever charted in the US, reaching 7th on the billboards, and in and Netherlands, where it reached 3rd. I don’t know if that had to due to the political message behind the song, but it’s interesting that one of the band’s biggest songs seemed to have a lackluster reception in the band’s home country of Ireland and in and around the British Isles.
