ESPN College Football Pick’em

Beginning this week I’m going to try my hand at ESPN’s weekly college pick’em contest, where they provide ten match-ups and I simply pick the winner of each one.  This is the “Straight” contest, meaning I just go straight down the list of games, picking who I think will win.  For each correct pick, one point will be awarded, with my season points accumulated and averaged.  If you want to play along, it’s completely free on ESPN’s website.  Click to join any group you would like to, for free, and begin playing.  There are many different prizes you can win, including winning up to $8,800.  Here are my Week 4 picks:

#23 Kentucky Wildcats at #8 Auburn Tigers

Saturday, September 26, 12:00 p.m.

My pick: Auburn

While the Kentucky program has gotten a lot better in recent years, they are definitely not on the same level as Auburn.  This should be an easy Tigers win, especially at home.

#5 Florida Gators at Ole Miss Rebels

Saturday, September 26, 12:00 p.m.

My pick: Florida

I don’t think Florida is legitimately the 5th best team in the country, but they are a lot better than Ole Miss.  Expect the Gators to roll in Oxford on Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss debut.

Kansas State Wildcats at #3 Oklahoma Sooners

Saturday, September 26, 12:00 p.m.

My pick: Oklahoma

This shouldn’t even warrant any discussion.  Oklahoma is on a different level than Kansas State.  And they’re at home.  At least a three-touchdown win is in store for the Sooners.

Georgia Southern Eagles at #19 Louisiana Rajun’ Cajuns

Saturday, September 26, 12:00 p.m.

My pick: Louisiana

I’d like to pick the upset here, but Georgia Southern barely escaped defeat two weeks ago against Campbell.  I think that says a lot.  With that being their only game so far this season, and Louisiana having played (and won) against two better teams, including #23 Iowa State, the Rajun’ Cajuns will win this one to stay unbeaten.

Iowa State Cyclones at TCU Horned Frogs

Saturday, September 26, 1:30 p.m.

My pick: TCU

This one is expected to be a close game.  It will also be the first game of the season for TCU.  I have a gut feeling that TCU will come out on top by a very close margin.

Mississippi State Bulldogs at #6 LSU Tigers

Saturday, September 26, 3:30 p.m.

My pick: LSU

This LSU team will have a different look this year, but they are still loaded.  They are one of the best recruiting teams in the nation, so they are always ready to replace big players like Joe Burrow.  Mississippi State won’t be starting off 2020 with a win.

#22 Army Black Knights at #14 Cincinnati Bearcats

Saturday, September 26, 3:30 p.m.

My pick: Cincinnati

Army is 2-0 and ranked in the top 25, but if you were to include conference teams who aren’t playing football yet, like the Big Ten, there’s no way they would be ranked.  Therefore, they look better than they really are.  This will be a close game until mid-way through the third quarter when the Bearcats will start to pull away.

#16 Tennessee Volunteers at South Carolina Gamecocks

Saturday, September 26, 7:30 p.m.

My pick: South Carolina

Both of these teams aren’t that good.  There is no way Tennessee is the 16th best team in the country.  To be honest, I feel like this match-up could go either way, but I’m giving the edge to South Carolina here.  Playing at home is a factor, combined with the fact I just don’t trust this Volunteers team.

Florida State Seminoles at #12 Miami Hurricanes

Saturday, September 26, 7:30 p.m.

My pick: Miami

Florida State doesn’t even have their head coach.  And they’ve been a program over the last couple of seasons that has showed how far they have fallen off from their glory days.  Miami is trying to get back to theirs, and they are much closer to it than the Seminoles.

North Carolina State Wolfpack at #20 Virginia Tech Hokies

Saturday, September 26, 8:00 p.m.

My pick: NC State

This is Virginia Tech’s first game of the season due to covid-19, and will be a little shorthanded because of it.  Even still, ESPN’s football power index is giving them an 87.8% chance to win.  I don’t think so.  NC State is a wild card every single season.  They can beat top teams and they can lose to the worst of them.  I think they’ll march into Blacksburg and leave Saturday night 2-0 on the year.  It will be a close game, though.
