Clash of Champions: Gold Rush (2020) Results and Reaction
Last night, the WWE had their Clash of Champions PPV and it was an awesome show. Most of the matches hit their mark and some storylines got a little more interesting. The show had more good than bad and I think the majority of fans agreed. There were some changes to the card on the day of the show and it would’ve been interesting to see how those matches would’ve played out, but I think they made the most of some unfortunate situations. I cannot stress how much I loved the fact that the PPV ended within 3 hours. Personally, I think that should be the limit on most shows, but I understand that is easier said than done. Last night would’ve been a fan’s delight for a live audience, but it looks like things could get very interesting within the next month or two. Here are the results of last night’s show and my reaction to it all.
- Men’s Tag Team Match: SmackDown Tag Team Championship
Cesaro and Nakamura (C) over Lucha House Party
This match was moved to the kickoff show due to scheduling changes and to be fair, I don’t really understand why they are having the kickoff show matches without a live audience, but I digress. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say this may be the best kickoff show match I’ve ever seen. Usually the kickoff show matches are intriguing enough to watch, but not enough to garner enough attention to be in the main show, but this match was great. All of the competitors in the ring are great in-ring performers and they showed every bit of that before the main show started. The champs retaining wasn’t a shock, but it felt like the match could’ve went either way.

- Men’s Triple Threat Ladder Match: Intercontinental Championship
Sami Zayn over Jeff Hardy (C) and AJ Styles
This match was incredible from start to finish and the only reason that I’m not marking this as match of the night is simply because there were more meaningful feuds that had matches that were just as good. In my predictions article, I thought that Sami Zayn had the least likely shot at regaining the title, but when I was watching it all unfold, it wasn’t really a shock. They all did well and the spots were planned carefully and very creatively. This was a wonderful opening match and it set the rest of the show up to live up to its potential.
GRADE: 9.5/10
- Women’s Singles Match: RAW Women’s Championship
Asuka (C) over Zelina Vega
It looks like Zelina Vega is moving into competition for good and it is great to see. The whole time that I was watching this match, I was puzzled as to why she isn’t in the ring more. These two ladies put on a solid performance and it lived up to what it was meant to be, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t a large-scale match due to the poor buildup. Both women did great though.

- Men’s Singles Match: United States Championship
Bobby Lashley (C) over Apollo Crews
Out of all the great matches on the card, this was the worst. It wasn’t a bad match, it just wasn’t that interesting. Lashley and Crews squared off just a few weeks ago in the same setting and it felt like it was literally the same match. This feels like the end of the feud and I think it is the right time to move forward. I guess we’ll see what happens with the US title conversation moving forward, but Lashley is a dominant champion.
GRADE: 7.3/10
- Men’s Tag Team Match: RAW Tag Team Championship
The Street Profits (C) over Andrade and Angel Garza
While the match was in full swing, it was another solid tag match, but the finish was odd. I didn’t really understand why it was so odd, but it turns out that Angel Garza got injured during the match and I didn’t see it happening. Under the circumstances, it was the right thing to end the match, but I feel like there could’ve been a little more offense with Andrade in the end. I don’t think they could’ve made it much better that way, but at least it would’ve prolonged the match.
GRADE: 7.6/10
- Women’s Singles Match: SmackDown Women’s Championship
Asuka over Bayley (C) (ended in DQ; title did not change hands)
Since Nikki Cross was unable to compete, changes had to be made. It is clear that they scrambled to find an opponent, because I don’t think they would’ve done another rematch of SummerSlam, since there were already a lot of rematches on the card already. This match went as well as it possibly could’ve considering the circumstances. What sold the segment obviously was the Sasha Banks attack on Bayley. I don’t know how quickly we are going to start seeing matches between those two, but it appears they’re not ready for Sasha to start competing again. We’ll see. The match itself wasn’t good, but the segment as a whole is what I’ll be grading on.
GRADE: 8.2/10
- Ambulance Match: WWE Championship
Drew McIntyre (C) over Randy Orton
This turned to be a wonderful match. The chemistry and masterful creativity in this match sold it and it is good to see these two in the ring each time it happens. McIntyre winning here was the right thing moving forward and I say this every time he defends the title, but I just wish fans could be in attendance for his great title reign. Drew McIntyre has dominated 2020 and it appears that the domination will continue. It was cool to see the legends get involved in the match. I don’t think many fans were expecting to see those guys appear. I was a little confused when Big Show attacked Orton, but when Christian appeared, I was fired up and ready for whatever was going to come next. I’m not going to lie, I was expecting Edge, but I’m glad it was Shawn Michaels that delivered a Sweet Chin Music on top of the ambulance. Wonderful storytelling and a great match that delivered. I’m excited to see what is next.

- Men’s Singles Match: Universal Championship
Roman Reigns (C) (with Paul Heyman) over Jey Uso * MATCH OF THE NIGHT*
And this perfectly capped off a really solid show. Roman Reigns being declared the Tribal Chief is perfect storytelling and I’m completely ready for the next few months. The match itself didn’t have to be perfect, but both competitors delivered on a tension filled main event. Although there were times where Uso appeared he could win, the match was obviously never in doubt and Roman Reigns absolutely dominated the contest. What is the payoff with this storyline though? A lot of fans are buzzing at the possibility of Roman facing a certain Hollywood star at WrestleMania. Is it a possibility? I believe so, but the bigger question is, are the fans go to feel robbed if The Rock and Roman doesn’t happen in the near future? I guess we’ll see. This was a great ending to the show and it builds a solid base for the future.
