Song of the Day: Roxanne

Roxanne by The Police. Roxanne was the first single from the band’s debut album Outlandos d’Amour. The song was originally released as a single in April of 1978, but was re-released a year later in April of 1979 and that time Roxanne charted at #12 in the UK and didn’t get much higher than 20-30s in the rest of Europe, US and Canada. Apparently to record this album, the band borrowed $1,500 from Stewart Copeland’s brother, Miles Copeland. Stewart was the band’s drummer and Miles became the band’s manager since he loaned them the money. And apparently Miles thought that what he was hearing from the recording sessions was horrible until he heard Roxanne. The day after hearing the song, he took it to the record label where they agreed to release it as a single. Again, it didn’t chart the first time through but it’s the song that you could say saved their career before it ever even started and the song got much, much more popular through the years.
