Song of the Day: The Galway Girl

I thought about waiting until St. Patrick’s Day to make this song of the day, but I just didn’t want to wait that long. If you think this is an Irish song then you’d be half right. It’s a true story involving an Irish girl and performed with Irish musicians such as Sharon Shannon, but the writer and original singer is Steve Earle, a Texan. When Steve was in Galway, Ireland making music with local musicians, he fell for a local girl, thus writing this song about her. It has since been covered by several folks and become an Irish anthem. According to irishmusicdaily.com, it is one of the most popular songs in Ireland. Though Earle wrote it and performed the original version, the most popular version is that of Mundy, who also performs it with Sharon Shannon. Below I will post three videos…the original by Steve Earle, the Mundy cover, and a cover by Mumford and Sons (because I love the band and it looks like they’re having so much fun. I love watching videos of Mumford and Sons play live where they have about 20-30 people onstage all playing, singing, and dancing. That’s l-i-v-i-n at its finest.)
