PGA Championship DFS Preview
As the PGA Tour leaves Texas…The Sports Chief needs a boost in making our DFS lineups. What better way than to start at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island! When making lineups, I love deciphering these coastal courses. I guess the main reason why would be because its essentially how golf was created…in Scotland…in the UK…these courses are what makes golf special…not too mention Kiawah Island is an amazing place (so I hear). KH Lee came away with the victory at the Byron Nelson and is listed in this weeks 156 golfer field. Being that it is the PGA Championship…ALL of the big names will be there and the top-70 will advance to the next round. Rory McIlroy looks to be the favorite, not only because of his win in CLT…but because he won at this course in 2012.
The course is an amazing 7,800+ yards which makes it one of the largest courses these golfers will ever see. It is also not a rolling course, meaning you cannot just launch the ball and expect it to roll down the green. The main reason is because Kiawah Island has elevated greens. That is not all though folks…the wind will become a factor, the gusts are expected to be 10-15mph on most days, but that could change. There is not any rain in the forecast either. When I made my lineup, I focused on Approach…the golfers who can keep it in the green…and most importantly I looked at a tourney that was geographically similar…RBC Heritage at Hilton Head. The golfers that performed well here have a decent chance (In my opinion) to play well here.
Tier 1: Collin Morikawa ($9,800)
Collin is my favorite golfer to pick. The Cal product is so reliable no matter where you play. In 2020, he won the PGA Championship and solidified himself as a top-tier golfer. Morikawa is 1st in Approach and 2nd in Greens in Regulation. He also finished 7th at the RBC Heritage, so pull the trigger on Morikawa at 30/1.
Tier 2: Matt Fitzpatrick ($8,400)
You can’t go without looking at the British golfers at coastal courses. I tend to lean Fitzpatrick a lot and especially at the world’s toughest courses. Fitzpatrick finished 4th at RBC and is 16th in strokes gained overall. The all-around game bodes well, especially at Kiawah. His ability to cut the air and putting should help him prevail at 66/1.
Tier 3: Chris Kirk ($7,000)
This is starting to feel like similar articles I have written in the past…but you cannot look past Chris Kirk. He finished 7th at the RBC Heritage and is another great all-around golfer. Kirk does not lose any strokes in any category and is 28th in overall strokes gained. His ability to scramble should help him as well in case he needs to clean it up as he is 25th in that. I like the Georgian at 200/1 at this criminally low price.
