Charlotte FC Report: Week 13, 2022
Charlotte suffered only their second loss at home last week against CF Montréal. They couldn’t contain the Canadian club and they lost 2-0. Charlotte didn’t seem as aggressive as they normally are in their last match, so hopefully that will return in the coming matches. Djordje Mihailovic continued his impressive season and was the first Montréal player to put a goal on the board. Alistair Johnston was the other in the second half. I think it was just a simple case of allowing the opponents to have too good of looks at the goal. Charlotte controlled possession for the majority of the time, but it really didn’t seem that way while watching. They also squandered a couple great opportunities and I knew that those were likely going to be meaningful in the outcome. Hopefully we’ll see them coming out in full force. We have another home matchup, but this time it’s against the worst team in the MLS. Also, there’s another Cup matchup coming up this week.
Charlotte is hosting another Canadian MLS team this weekend and luckily, they’re not doing so hot so far this season. Their season hasn’t been great so far, but they’re on somewhat of a roll. They had a big win at home last week against FC Dallas and they’ve not lost in their last 3. They defeated Toronto 3 weeks ago and drew against San Jose. Yet again, Charlotte is facing a team that gives up a good number of goals. Vancouver allows nearly 2 goals a match and hopefully Charlotte can light up the scoreboard. Much like Charlotte, Vancouver has a lot of options to go to for scoring opportunities. Lucas Cavallini is their leading scorer for the club with 3 goals so far.
Charlotte is going to face some tough competition in Club play this week. They will travel North to face the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs and Charlotte will have a tall task on their hands. They’re currently 5th in the East, but their record doesn’t show what they’re capable of. Lewis Morgan and Patryk Klimala are their top two scoring options and have 9 goals combined between the two. In previous matchups, they have went light on their lineups in Club play, but I think they’ll be coming out in full force for this one. Hopefully Charlotte can pick up that first road win against and MLS team.
In other news, Charlotte FC announced they will be facing the English Premier League powerhouse club, Chelsea FC in a friendly match in July. It will be Charlotte’s first friendly in their history and what a historic matchup that will be. Also, it’s worth noting that they will be installing grass at Bank of America Stadium in preparation for the match. They went with field turf back in 2021 after having grass for nearly 3 decades. It must’ve been a deal-breaker. So, if you notice the field looking different in upcoming matches, you’ll know why. Well, Charlotte has two good opportunities to pick up wins, hopefully they can shake that loss last week pretty quickly.
