NHL Frozen Frenzy on ESPN Preview
I wrote an article a couple weeks ago talking about the Frozen Frenzy special that will air on ESPN2. This special will mimic the broadcast style of NFL Red Zone that the NFL Network does every Sunday, but will highlight every single NHL team. All teams are going to be in action tonight and if you can't find an interesting game, then you might have a problem. There are a lot of exciting games on tonight and the majority of them will have spaced starts in 15-minute intervals. ESPN will air 3 games starting at 6pm EST and ESPN 2 will provide non-stop highlights of games happening at that current time starting at 8pm, hosted by John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes. The Frozen Frenzy starts on ESPN+ at 7pm, if you want a head start. Below, I will preview each game, I’m not going to spend a lot of time with each game, but I just wanted to give you a heads up of all of the action and my predictions for the game. My predicted winners will be bolded. With all of that being said, let’s dive in.
- Toronto Maple Leafs (-170) at Washington Capitals: 6PM
The Leafs are favored at home in the first matchup of the day and it is also one of the featured games on ESPN’s Tuesday tripleheader. This one should be simple. Leafs are good, the Caps are not so much. Give me Toronto.
- Anaheim Ducks at Columbus Blue Jackets (-145): 6:30PM
The Ducks’ only win came against the Carolina Hurricanes and I think this could be a winnable game. However, I don’t think it will happen. The Jackets have been decent to start the year and have gotten wins against good teams. Plus, home-ice advantage.
- Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators (-160): 6:45PM
Ottawa has looked great this season and the Sabres are kind of middle of the road to bad. I’ll take the Senators and I think Vladimir Tarasenko will have a couple goals in this one.
- Carolina Hurricanes (-125) at Tampa Bay Lightning: 7PM
This is one of the more interesting matchups tonight. Both teams are good but struggling. Both defenses have been bad, but I think that changes tonight. I think the Lightning win a low scoring game on their home ice.
- New Jersey Devils (-225) at Montreal Canadiens: 7:15PM
The Devils are big favorites in this contest and I don’t think we’ll see an upset here. The Canadiens are one of the worst teams in hockey and the Devils are one of the most talented. Don’t let the good Montreal start fool you. I think Timo Meier will have a big game tonight.
- Dallas Stars (-115) at Pittsburgh Penguins: 7:30PM
I’m kind of surprised that Dallas is only a -115 favorite. I think they are quite a bit better the Pittsburgh at the moment. I predict that Jake Oettinger will get his first shutout win of the season.
- San Jose Sharks at Florida Panthers (-285): 7:45PM
The Sharks are probably the undisputed worst team in hockey right now. I don’t think they will get their first win of the season against the Panthers on the road.
- Colorado Avalanche (-140) at New York Islanders: 8PM
The Avs are a better team obviously, but I don’t know. I think the Islanders pick up the upset win tonight and I think they will do it in OT. Colorado has to lose at some point, why not tonight in a tough road matchup?
- Seattle Kraken at Detroit Red Wings (-140): 8:15PM
Detroit is probably the hottest teams in hockey at the moment and they are facing a struggling Kraken team. I’m hammering the Red Wings all day long at -140. Alex DeBrincat is on fire right now with 8 goals already on the season. I wouldn't be surprised if the lights come on for him again tonight.
- Boston Bruins (-235) at Chicago Blackhawks: 8:30PM
Connor Bedard has been pretty good, but is obviously still adjusted to the pace of the NHL. I don’t think the Blackhawks have what it takes to take down the Bruins right now. Boston appears to be a wagon, yet again. I think Bedard will score tonight, but the Bruins are a powerhouse and will win this one. This is going to be the 2nd game on ESPN for the night.
- St. Louis Blues at Winnipeg Jets (-190): 8:45PM
This may be the least exciting game on the slate. Give me Winnipeg. I think Connor Hellebuyck will dominate in front of the net.
- Edmonton Oilers at Minnesota Wild (-120): 9PM
Despite the Oilers struggles to start the year, I am a little surprised to see the Wild favored. I guess they’re factoring in McDavid’s injury as the big reason. The Wild are playing better and they’re a solid team, I have to go out on a limb with a couple of these, so I’ll take the Oilers tonight in a close one.
- Vancouver Canucks at Nashville Predators (-120): 9:15PM
This is a nice, even, late contest and I really don’t know which way to go with this one. The Canucks are better on the attack and the Preds have a tough time finding the back of the net, so I think Vancouver will get out ahead early and take the win on the road.
- New York Rangers (-135) at Calgary Flames: 9:45PM
The Rangers are the better team, but I like this matchup for the Flames. The Flames haven’t been good so far, but I wouldn't say the Rangers have either. With that being said, Calgary has been on an east coast swing, so getting them back at home could be just what they need to find that groove. Flames win in OT.
- Arizona Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-205): 10:30PM
The Coyotes are probably overperforming at the moment, but they have gotten off to a decent start. They aren't really scoring well though. Their defense has been solid, but they will face a good Kings team that can light up the scoreboard. I will take the Kings. Also, the Kings point leader, Kevin Fiala will get his first goal of the season tonight.
- Philadelphia Flyers at Vegas Golden Knights (-220): 11PM
Vegas has been the best team in hockey this season. It is close, but I would give them the edge. The Flyers have started the season well, but I think they will be humbled in this road contest. They only have one road victory so far this season in 3 games. This will also be the final game of the ESPN tripleheader. It is going to be a late victory for the Knights. Especially for those of us on the east coast.
